CatS60 phone, mtp protocol enabled in serrings.
Ubuntu 16.04, libmtp9:amd64 1.1.13-1 (compiled from deb-src)

$ mkdir CATS60
$ mtpfs CATS60

Looks like an issue in libmtp or even below...
dmesg shows, in particular
usbfs: process 13945 (events) did not claim interface 0 before use

I do not know if it is relevant.

    is the device unlocked the file system accessed? hard to say whart is the issue

    Thanks for the answer. The filesystem is encrypted but perfectly accessible at least for adb, if it is relevant. Is there some special checkbox somewhere deep in menus of Android 6?

    Actually I have found a soulution, that might be of use for someone.. "primitive ftpd" app can be used to put/delete files over wifi with sftp. Then "SD scanner" is needed to force update of media metadata, so applications are aware of changes. Works fine, and no cable needed.

    usually current version of Android need approval for the USB MTP level access , the default is just "charging".
