I have two devices, one is a samsung galaxy S8 and the other is the S8+ both running Oreo (android 8.0). I use Cinnamon desktop with gvfs-mtp

When I connect the above phones, I can see the main folders, but if I navigate to DCIM/Camera then the system becomes unresponsive for about 30 minutes. Copying files seems to either not work at all or be extremely slow (10KiB/s).

Are these phones not supported at all? or it there a problem in my system?

Booting to Windows 7 on the same system and everything works fine, I can navigate the folders and copy everything at high speed.

Thank you!

    Hello,
    same problem here with my Samsung Galaxy S9 on Fedora 27 and Ubuntu 18.04 (no issue on Windows) :

    $ sudo mtp-detect
    libmtp version: 1.1.14

    Listing raw device(s)
    Device 0 (VID=04e8 and PID=6860) is a Samsung Galaxy models (MTP).
    Found 1 device(s):
    Samsung: Galaxy models (MTP) (04e8:6860) @ bus 3, dev 25
    Attempting to connect device(s)
    error returned by libusb_claim_interface() = -6LIBMTP PANIC: Unable to initialize device
    Unable to open raw device 0
    OK.

    Similar problem on my S8:
    I can read the files but cannot write any files...

    $ mtp-detect
    libmtp version: 1.1.16

    Listing raw device(s)
    Device 0 (VID=04e8 and PID=6860) is a Samsung Galaxy models (MTP).
    Found 1 device(s):
    Samsung: Galaxy models (MTP) (04e8:6860) @ bus 2, dev 15
    Attempting to connect device(s)
    error returned by libusb_claim_interface() = -6LIBMTP PANIC: Unable to initialize device
    Unable to open raw device 0
    OK.

    In my case, I can see the files

    You must unmount the gvfs-mtp device before calling the libmtp operation
