I think I found a solution for the canon makernotes. Simply returning 
NULL, instead of the parent tag, makes it obvious that the tag is not 
supported. The patch is attached to this message. I assume the patch is 
harmless for existing applications because the name of the parent tag 
contains not really valuable information. Hiding those tags from the 
user is probably a much better solution anyway.
