XFree cvs tree has fix that is dealing with endian DMA issues on ATI
cards since 2002-06-07 (compiling X11 yourself ??).

Strange audio sampling rate.
Please re-check that with latest CVS version.
Hopefully tonight I'll check in Daniel's patch.
