Solved problems are perhaps of public interest ? I just checked everything again and I found the mistake ... pretty dumb. The program I had the problems with also depends on the quicktime4linux library and I had to use a modified version of it to be able to link with libdv since quicktime4linux incorporates an old version of libdv. When I reconfigured the new CVS checkout, configure picked up the unmodified version of quicktime and that caused the problems. Anyway, I think your extern -> static change still makes sense and everything works well with it.
