One thing that can really make a consumer DV camera suck is a cheap wide angle lens. My Sony PC100 has a nice Carl Zeiss lens and I stick a $30 dollar wide angle cheap glass thing on it and I am pretty sure I lose about half of the resolving power around the 10% of the frame thats around the edges. Some of the Kenko lenses are even worse. The chromatic aberration can be really bad.
