Well, I've begun on this, finally...
I've managed to get bash, binutils, and bzip2
compiled statically and installed into an LFM
filesystem.
I haven't had to change too much code, yet.
However, I've noticed that the gnu/autoconf
generated configure scripts create reams of
code that reference into /dev.
We can always write sed/shell scripts to
fix these up, but I'm wondering if we really
want to move /dev to /sys/dev.
Moving it does indeed seem to place it in a
more consistent location along with the other
system directories. However, we still have
/tmp and /mnt with their traditional meanings
as system-wide locations hanging right off
of the root fs node, and /dev could retain
that meaning.
Lemme know what you think.
Might moving /dev be the same as some other
directories we're moving as far as the number
of changes needed to do so? If it's the
worst of the lot, maybe we could leave it.
On the other hand, we can always symlink it
for the meantime...
Oh, and attached is a working document in
dvi format that has some additions over the
web pages.
I'm also thoroughly documenting the changes
that I've been making and the steps and scripts
I'm creating to do this.
