Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

Hello together, maybe you noticed that there is only little progress at the legong project. My time is limited at the moment. A lot of work is waiting for me at my employer. So i have little motivation coding in my spare time. And that time is not enough for a "big" project like legong. Even more if i must develop the complete thing alone. At the moment i'm thinking about dropping the project. Since the beginnig of the project there seems that i'm the only developer who's coding around at legong. If there is nobody who will help out a little bit the dropping is fact! So my question to all developers: Is there anybody who has worked at some of the open tasks? Or haven even has motivation to do so? If not i will freeze the project next week. Freezing means not that i remove the project completely. The sources and the sourceforge project page will exist furthermore, maybe there comes a time for a restart... greetings Timo __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Hi Björn, you are right, the url was wrong. Thanks for that... > Is this Wiki for the Team only? No! Every user who knows the url can change the contents. I took a simple wiki script. No user right management there. But i don't think that it is a problem. Most Wikis run like that. > And can I write my ideas there, too? > But I cann't programing them. I think if it are only ideas they should be discussed here before writing them to the open Tasks. But as you can see there is a Wiki page GeneralIdeas. On this page we can put general ideas (maybe brought to you by Users). Timo __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Hi all, Legong has a WikiWiki now. The link: http://www.javaeditor.de/LegongWiki Don't know if all know about wikiwikis. So here some words about it: WikiWikis are editable HTML Pages. Everyone (!!) can change the contents. For changing the contents click on the lower right link called "edit". We should use the WikiWiki for managing the OpenTasks (Todos). It is a possibility that we can fix information about some tasks such as needed features and so on. If someone is interested in "taking" a task. Just change the content of the WikiWiki. Set your name in (don't forget to update the state (completness) of a task regulary)) and leave just a message here in the mailing list that you work on a task. Hi Dan, i have added you to the legong developers. The editor component decission isn't made until now. I preffered Scintilla because it seems to be a mature, fast and very stable solution (The Scintilla.NEt control maybe has some problems). I took a look an the ICSharpCode.TextEditor some month ago. Seems to be nice. But i found it hard to put it in own projects. And if i'm right there are only C# and Java highlighters at the moment??? Hmm, not a easy decission. ICSharpCode.TextEditor seems to be much more work to integrate than Scintilla... How is your experience about that Dan? > I have gotten ScintillaNET compiled & running here with VS2003 Everett, > but its still very buggy. I can send this code to anyone who has > Everett beta, or I can try to convert it to 2002 if anyone is > interested. A converted version would be nice. I have only the "normal" VErsion of Visual Studio.NET. You can send it to me directly. > If you want to go ahead & add me [dbright] to the project & give me a > task then we can get going. I look forward to working with everyone. Ok, i mail a link to the new Legong WikiWiki (just a test/prototype). There are some of the tasks that have to be done. Hey all, Im Dan Bright from the SharpEdit project and I spoke to Timo about helping with legong also. I finally had a chance to play with 0.0.1.0 from sourceforge and it looks very promising. I have gotten ScintillaNET compiled & running here with VS2003 Everett, but its still very buggy. I can send this code to anyone who has Everett beta, or I can try to convert it to 2002 if anyone is interested. I have also been working quite a lot with the ICSharpCode.TextEditor control from SharpDevelop. Mike Krueger (author of the textcontrol) has been very helpful in getting me started, and this textcontrol is VERY promising for function outlining, highlighting, intellisence (auto-complete) and so on. If I had a choice I would use this as the text control for legong. Anyway, these are just suggestions. Let me know what you guys think. If you want to go ahead & add me [dbright] to the project & give me a task then we can get going. I look forward to working with everyone. Dan Bright |

Hi, ok, than lets start. For a "class manager" we need the following features. - Simple interface for getting all methods and members for a given object instance. Lets say we have the foolowing "code" String XYZ = "Test"; At another part of the code the legong user types in XYZ. -> The editor component will throw an event, so we kwnow that a completion combox box mus be drawn. I think the ClassManager should have a method in the form: public ArrayList getMethodsForInstance(string strClassName, string strInstanceName); This method gets the name of the current class and the name of the objkect instance (in this case XYZ). The method needs to look up what type XYZ is and what methods are available for this class. Therefor it needs internal HashMaps where this information is saved. To generate this HashMap you will ne a class parser. The parser can generated with a parser generator. About a year ago i tested ANTLR (www.antlr.org). It generates me a Java parser. In the meanwhile there is a C# version of the parser generator. So i think i should be possible to build a c# based java parser with antlr. And we need a second/third method: public ArrayList getMethods(string strClassName) public ArrayList getMembers/string strClassName) This method delivers all methods and members of a class. The objects in the ArrayList of all Methods should be include the following informations: 1.) Method/Member Name 2.) Visiblity (public, private, protected) 3.) return parameters 4.) parameters I think thats it. Questions / ideas. What think the others?? Hi Björn, today we where talking about if the Framework is included in SP3 of Win2k. Yes it is. I don´t need to install any aditional Software to make Legong run. I don´t know if the Framework is included in SP2 too. Anyway, I think it is not a big problem at all. Let the development of Legong going a half year, then nearly 80% of Micosoft User will have a Framework on their PC. cu Phips ----- Original Message ----- From: "Björn Wallmeier" <BWa...@we...> To: <leg...@li...> Sent: Tuesday, February 11, 2003 3:16 PM Subject: Re: Re: [Legong-devel] First release available for download Hi, hmm then you should write the link to the .NET on the Project Page. Hi Björn, thats the one big disapointment about the usage of .NET and C#. You will need the .NET Virtual Machine. There is no way arround it! But we have a faster development. New versions will get ready earlier and thats an advantage for the users. The redistributable for .NET has approx. 10 MB in size! The users doesn't need the Framework. But i think that will be not a problem. .NET is pushed hard by M$. So there will be a bundled .NET Frameworks with each Servicepack, DirectX (so i heard) and so on. Sorry about that, but as i said, thats the disadvantage we get. But we gain a lot of advantages instead. Hello all, as promised i worked for a first release of legong this weekend. I have released the first version of legong on sourceforge at the moment (downloads for binaries and sources). I will try to checkin the Sources to the CVS this afternoon... My little roadmap for the next release: - GUI improvements (images in menus...) (done allready!) - An explorer view in the workspace bar - Save the GUI state to XML file - "Check for new version" function - "New Files"-Dialog with templates - Recent file menu (done allread!) Please give it a try! Developers: A little todo list for small improvement that have to be done for the next releases: - A view menu with Show/Hide of the toolbars (Workspacebar, Outputbar, Main-Toolbar, Status-Bar) - Scintilla integration - Configurable File associations (for Java files, Legong Project files, XML Files...) - An Options Dialog - Find in Files - Find/Replace Dialog - Cut,Copy, Paste (only after scintilla integration) - Print (only after scintilla integration) and the things i posted last week... Hi Legong-Team, sorry for being late with the first kick-off-release of legong. This release will give you the needed project files and the gui Main form. I think that i will be able to upload it after this weekend. Some first "subprojects" that should be done is a "Find in Files" function, a concept of "how to handle java project files" and a "Java Class Parser". Any volunteers for that? Some more detailed information for this tasks: 1.) Find in Files: A multi-threaded find in files solution (that can be stopped with a cancel button) with the possibility of using regular expression as the search query. If possible the same functionality and gui-layout as the find-in-files of VisualStudio.NET. Maybe the implementation (source available) of SharpDevelop can be used as a fist-start. 2.) Project File Concept: We need a concept of how to save a java project (What informations should be saved, how to add files and so on. Maybe with a first implementation. 3.) Java class parser: We need a parser to get all class methods and members from a java file. The ANTLR parser generator can create a c#-based Java parser. Someone should implement a nice wrapper-class arround it. So we can easily integrate it to Legong. Ok, thats it for the moment. Timo __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
