I was wondering what you think about combining programs? I've created a photo ward directory program (also in python - my first python program in fact). I just added it to sourceforge called "Ward Directory" http://sourceforge.net/projects/warddirectory/. I initially created it to create photo ward directories, but later added text-only by a feature request. I really like what you've done in creating a compact photo directory. I was wondering if you would like to combine programs? I don't know if I saw any licensing info on your source. I've released mine GPL3, so if that's an issue I understand. Anyway, feel free to check my program out. I think the UI is pretty good on my program, but I see that you've added some very nice features like "exclude middle names" and short addresses and such... Let me know what you think! If you don't want to do the installer on my program, all you need is two files (WardDirectory.py and icons.py) assuming that you have other python toolkits installed (reportlab, wxWidgets, python image library)

I've got no problem with combining programs if you wish to give it a go. You can consider my code licensed under BSD. It can be used for any purpose commercial or otherwise. If you wish to integrate with your code the shortest path may be to make use of the command line driven capability (or the code used to support it).

Your GUI does appear pretty impressive. As you can probably tell my goal is to be quite minimalist with my interface. Provide it a CSV file (MLS, or LUWS) and a few options and out you're done. That way it is easy to update in highly volatile wards (such as mine) since all you do is give it the new CSV.

I've have a python based photo directory script I created that is similar in nature to ldscompactdirectory. The biggest addition is that you also specify a base folder for the pictures. It expects the images of families and individuals to be named appropriately (based on people's names). In the options you can ding some check boxes to state whether you want a family directory/Relief Society/Elders/High Priest (or any combination thereof).

In addition it does some other nice things. If you don't have a family picture but you have an individual picture for the husband or wife, the individual picture is used as well. Optionally it can provide a list of unpictured people (so you have your list of people to chase down with the camera). I haven't found time to "finish it" and package it up for publishing yet but if you're interested in taking a look at it I can send you the current source.

But like I said, feel free to pillage what you'd like from my code. I just want to make the job of creating these directories a painless as possible whether it be my tool or any other.

I've added specific licensing terms to the code in revision 31. The project is licensed under the "simplified BSD License" which allow it to be used for most any purpose.
