I am pretty sure that LCDSmartie does not support SSL for
POP3 accounts. Obivously this is a downside because
plain-text POP3 transmits your username and password in the
clear, and also because gMail does not support non-SSL
connections.
Hopefully some time in the furure SSL support will be
encorporated int othe project.

Works for me in ver. 5.3. My settings:
Server: pop.gmail.com
SSL: 995
LoginName, Password: obvious.
Fixed on 5.4.2.x . - needed testing on providers other than Google
