As requested by Jeremy, here are the details of the TinyMCE usability problems raised during testing of Blog 3. These need to be raised as bugs with TinyMCE and tracked (or possibly fixed) by the LabTrove developers

Extracted text for ease of parsing:

    1. There is no highlighting of misspelled words? This is fairly standard behaviour and users will expect it. Spell checker only highlights wrongly spelt words after you press the button, if you add new words, these are not picked up until you switch the spellchecker on and off. Ideally this should check as you go along. Mark: this functionality is only provided for form inputs that do not declare the “contenteditable” attribute, i.e., it must be implemented manually by tinyMCE. To this end, I have implemented the tinyMCE spell-checker plugin using Aspell for the back-end (it lets us to things like check the spelling of content that is sent to the server by a user-agent that is not a Web browser).
    2. If you type next to a word that is marked as spelt wrong, all the following words are also marked.
    3. The Action/OK and Cancel buttons in the text editor are the wrong way round and it is very confusing to have them so far apart. They should be on the bottom right like every other application.
    4. The Paragraph formatting – the “Preformatted” option looks like normal text.
Mark: The “preformatted” option is a tinyMCE feature that sanitizes whitespace such as tabs and spaces (see: http://www.tinymce.com/wiki.php/Configuration:preformatted\) OK, not very obvious and not what I would expect it to do. I guess I’m expecting an option that would have ‘code’ or ‘pre’ style formatting. The name preformatted doesn't mean anything to a user.
    5. The scroll bar in the Paragraph formatting drop-down disappears. Mouse over to display it, mouse out and it is gone. Need to close and reopen the drop-down to see it again. This becomes annoying quite quickly. The Paragraph formatting drop-down scroll bar doesn’t always work and is a bit difficult to click. I’m seeing similar problems with the scroll bars for the post itself. The behaviour is odd and annoying.
Mark: This is a bug with tinyMCE. I’m sure they will appreciate all of your tickets!
    6. Adding Bold to text formatted as Heading doesn’t seem to make any difference. Should it? (Italic, underline, strikethrough do work fine).
Mark: Again, this is a bug with tinyMCE.
    7. New line behaviour is a little bit strange. Sometimes when I press enter at the end of a line the cursor moves to the following line, and other times it adds a break.
Mark: Again, this is a bug with tinyMCE.
    8. The numbers next to the font size in the drop-down list don’t really mean anything, the font size should be enough.
Mark: Again, this is a bug with tinyMCE
    9. When I changed the font size to 7(36)pt, it won’t let me change it to a lower number., when the cursor is in the position that I want to start typing in the new size. But I can select text I have already written and change that to a different font size.
Mark: Again, this is a bug with tinyMCE
    10. It would be nice to know what the default font size is for a particular paragraph setting. Also when I change the text to a different Paragraph setting style, the font size remains the same. I would expect it to change to the default for that setting if I select the paragraph formatting after changing the size.
Mark: Again, this is a bug with tinyMCE
    11. When I start a new line I think I would expect it to go back to standard paragraph font – at the moment I can’t get back to a bog standard <p> format without editing the html, because the following gets added: <p><span style="font-size: xx-small;"><strong><br /></strong></span></p> I think the problem I’m having is because setting the paragraph format doesn’t change the font size back to ‘normal’.
Mark: Again, this is a bug with tinyMCE
    12. There should be an option for no highlighting to switch off the background-color tag <span style="background-color: #ffffff;">No highlighting</span>
Mark: Again, this is a bug with tinyMCE
    13. Cut , Copy, and Paste icons generate message: Currently not supported by your browser, use keyboard shortcuts instead. Be nice if buttons weren’t present in that case, but much better if it did actually work!
Mark: Again, this is a bug with tinyMCE
    14. I’m not sure how the “Paste from Word” option differs from Paste, the Paste buttons are rather confusing. I expect when I press them to have the buttons perform the paste action, not change the mode of the paste that I then still have to do manually.
    15. Find and replace – Replace All. The message that is displayed is a little unfriendly, can it be ‘information’ or ‘success’ rather than what looks like an ‘error’. Also it would be nice to have a count of how many replacements were made.
Mark: Again, this is a bug with tinyMCE
    16. Redo, after undoing Find and Replace does not work. It does work for things like changing the formatting and changing text though.
Mark: Again, this is a bug with tinyMCE
    17. Its quite difficult to know what is being done with Undo and Redo if it is happening off the screen. Possibly moving the cursor to the point where the change back or forwards has been made might help, but I’m not sure.
Mark: Again, this is a bug with tinyMCE
    18. Would be nice in Find and Find and Replace to have a list of previously used search terms (say last 4).
Mark: Again, this is a bug with tinyMCE
    19. The quote button only seems to indent the text. I would expect it to be formatted in a different way. Perhaps Courier, or something nicer. Same formatting does seem to be normal in other places though.
Mark: Again, this is a bug with tinyMCE
    20. After using a quote, there is no way to get the indentation back to normal except by editing the html. It should behave like the bullets do, to stop the bullets I press enter twice.
Mark: Again, this is a bug with tinyMCE
    21. I have to have text selected in order to create a link. I’m not sure I should have to (but Wordpress is the same).
Mark: Again, this is a bug with tinyMCE
    22. I can’t seem to delete anchors, and if I add an anchor at the bottom of the text I created in the post, I cannot create a new line beneath it without editing the html. Also I seem to end up with multiple identical anchors one under another, but I’m not sure how I’m doing that. Something to do with pasting a link an anchor?
Mark: Again, this is a bug with tinyMCE
    23. Not all anchor links seem to work. One from bottom to top works, one from top to bottom does not.
Mark: Again, this is a bug with tinyMCE
    24. Help is not Help! I was expecting assistance with the formatting options and the Help button just provides an About page and a list of Plugins. Neither of these is any use to the user. We need actual help. We should provide that from this button or remove the button completely.
    25. If I try to click on the right side of a table in order to carry on writing text, when I press return to get a line break, it creates a line break at the top of the post. This is unexpected and annoying. I have to click at the right of the table and then press arrow down to get the cursor below the table to start typing again.
    26. Insert horizontal line makes more sense outside of the table section. There are two of these. The one that lets you set the width and height gives you some options. It is annoying that once you have added the horizontal line, you don’t seem to be able to change the settings. Even though you have it selected, it seems to create a new one anyway.
    27. I can’t select a horizontal line. If I want to delete it I have to get the cursor in the right place and use backspace.
    28. No idea how to use citation element,
    29. No idea how to use abbreviation or acronym (is there a dictionary of these somewhere that will get linked to?)
    30. No idea how to use Insert/Edit attributes
