#3 KWave says PulseAudio device is unknown ... ??

I loaded an ogg-format file, attempted to play it before editing, and immediately saw an error box with a message beginning with KWave says PulseAudio device is unknown ...

I didn't attempt to edit anything -- thought it best to make sure the sound works, first.

??? What must be configured to allow KWave to recognize, or connect with, PulseAudio?

If more details would help, please ask, Thanks!

I received a similar report some days ago. It get the impression that the pulseaudio library has changed in some distributions and now shows some slightly different behaviour regarding how to use the "default" device.

Could you please start Kwave from a console and log the output into a file:

    kwave --nofork 2>&1 | tee kwave.log

and then open the "Settings" / "Playback" dialog and try to play a test sound?

Or do you have the possibility to upgrade to a newer version? Kwave v0.8.11 is really old, I released v0.8.12 long time ago, then v0.8.99 and some days ago v0.9.0...

    thanks for reporting!
    Thomas

Thanks for your help. It looks like a nice program, and I'd like to be able to use it.

Perhaps this will be helpful in locating the problem:

    > kwave --nofork 2>&1 | tee kwave.log

Was that the right place to do this -- maybe it's a little bit different because of being an old version?

    What else may I send?

After I get this off, I'll see what's involved to update, to a more recent version. Then, I'll have to send a note to the Linux Mint repo maintenance team!

Sorry ... I just copied from terminal and you said you wanted the log file attached. I just looked and the only difference is that the file's last line is:
This is kwave v0.8.11 (compiled for KDE 4.11.97)

Or do you have the possibility to upgrade to a newer version? Kwave v0.8.11 is really old ...

is there any way of doing this through a .deb package manager? I'd hate to get the dependencies messed up ...

I'd be installing this on Linux Mint Quiana.

I've sent an E-mail request to Debian to update their KWave version. Apparently, Mint 'rebrands' Debian repos.
The request was made like so:
"Any mail sent to KWave@packages.debian.org will be forwarded to the maintainer responsible for that package."
If you think the request was made incorrectly, please advise, because unless you know of a *.deb download, I'm hoping the repo is updated fairly soon.

Ok, I cannot see any output from the PulseAudio playback plugin, strange...

    But anyway...
You can go to the kwave homepage (http://kwave.sf.net), download the latest tarball (kwave-0.9.0-1.tar.bz2) and then look at the online manual in your preferred language (on the homepage, left side). There is a chapter that describes how to build a .deb package!

That's great, thanks. Building a package will be a learning experience, but so long as I can follow instructions, then that will be fine. Once I have the .deb package, troubleshooting can continue.

Just as an aside, it's surprising there are no .deb builds on this page ...

Hi, just a "ping"... -> does this problem still exist?
Otherwise I would like to close this bug report.

    (background:
I would like to shut down this bug tracker, as Kwave has moved into official kde-multimedia and having two independent bug tracking systems is no good idea)
