On an ACER laptop Travelmate 6465WLMi with Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU (T7200 @ 2.00GHz) Dual core system only one core shows up in the panel, while other monitoring programs reveal two cores. In the left pane of the configuration I can see two times "coretemp sensors", both are set to core 1. I can edit one of them to read core 2 in the right pane, but still only one shows up in the panel even when checking the checkbox for "visible" on the panel for both cores.

this is sort of correct, Ksensors configuration pannel shows the 2 core temps just as LM_Sensors does:
coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +37°C (high = +85°C)
coretemp-isa-0001
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 1: +37°C (high = +85°C)
however something gets mixed up in Ksensors when changing any settins on either core0 or core1 entries, during configurating checking a box in core0 (to show in tray for example) this box will also be checked when you then look at core1. Or after closing and starting ksensors you can have both cores with the same name.
But its nice to see my MBM under linux now :)
