Hello there I would greatly appreciate a small amount of your time to assist with my doctoral research at The University of Newcastle. The research concerns open source licensing and we're seeking developers working on Java projects. The research is supervised, ethics-approved, anonymous and results will be freely available. Participation will also provide a custom licensing report for your project. To learn more, please visit: http://licensing-research.newcastle.edu.au Thanks for reading this email, and I hope you'll consider participating. Best regards Ben Alex (My apologies for being off-topic; this list will not be emailed again) |

Quasar: http://www.linuxcanada.com Pro: Very comprehensive. Written in C++ for the Qt environment. Uses PostgreSQL as the data store. Seems to work, as far as I went in evaluating it. Con: Complex. Not a replacement for MYOB or Quicken & the like. Thus not suitable for a small - 'Mum and Dad' type of operation. Uses what seems like 'hundreds' of little forms for data entry. Appears to be an exact copy of a card-file data system using a computer. Very much tied to the (complex) Canadian VAT system. Wierd menu system to navigate around the program. Things may have changed since I looked at it during Sept 2005. SQL-Ledgers: http://www.sql-ledger.org/ Good reviews at: http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=06/11/06/2129253 http://lwn.net/Articles/208852/ I have not played with this one. Compiere: http://www.compiere.org/ Has had differences of opinion between the users and originator of the codebase, and has been forked. http://www.adempiere.com/ That's about all I know about. -- CS |

Hello, I guess, there are more technical problems, which caused the sleep / dead or what ever of this project. As far as I remebmer, it was form driven - and this was already not state or the art when the project was still active. A network / brower or what ever based implementation would have been better. 2nd: it was / is quite complicated to install. So many interested people did not join, because the could not take the first step into the project - just download and play around. 3rd: as far as I remember, the code was Jdk 1.x based - while everbody switched to 1.2 verfy fast after it was released. But the code was not ported - and from 1.1 to 1.2 there was the biggest change in Java which was ever done. This was a huge problem for the project as well. BTW: I guess, we can declare this project dead. ios-online, who initialy started this project, has removed everything from their page and the offical website (<> sourceforge.net) from the net. By the way: do you know similar projects, which are still alive? Regards Joern |

Apologies for spamming, I posted this on the forums, but will put it here, to see if anyone is around: I have downloaded this project, and have managed to make it work, (there is a small patch required for CSVImporter.java, which I can submit if anyone is interested) and would like to take it further. However looking at these forums/mailing lists, there is no activity on it, so my question is, is this project a) Dead, b) Sleeping, or c) active elsewhere? If the answer is a or b, is there interest in restarting it/ and if the answer is c, can someone point me in the correct direction. Many thanks, Tim |

Hi Guys. This is my first time posting on this list. I'm pretty new to Linux, and this is definitely the first time i've tried to install something this massive. I'm trying to install Kontor for my small business. I'm running Fedora Core 2 on a very able box. I'm using the Kontor Install Howto, found on http://www.linux-kontor.de/en/download/. Its helped me out alot, but I'm to the point where i'm trying to run the createDB.sh script (page 52 of the howto), and its hanging up on me. I'll let my prompts tell you the rest: [root@server tools]# ls bankdisks createMainMenu.sh dboSQL.sh exportDescriptions.sh loadMainMenu.sh createDB.sh CVS execDBScript.sh loadDescriptions.sh loadSamples.sh [root@server tools]# pwd /var/kontor-13/IoS/kontor/bin/tools [root@server tools]# ./createDB.sh ../kontor.server: line 52: /var/jdk/bin/java: No such file or directory ../kontor.server: line 52: /var/jdk/bin/java: No such file or directory That is the output of the script. Here is the contents of the /var/jdk/bin directory: [root@server bin]# pwd /var/jdk/bin [root@server bin]# ls i386 i486 i586 i686 i786 ia32 ia64 javakey jre rmiregistry I've tried creating a symbolic link in the /var/jdk/bin directory, to multiple jre's- in the i386 and i686 dir. I get this error then- [root@server tools]# ./createDB.sh /var/jdk/bin/java: error while loading shared libraries: libjava.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory /var/jdk/bin/java: error while loading shared libraries: libjava.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Anything this list can do to help me is so greatly appreciated. I understand that this is a java problem, but I don't know what I'm doing with java either! Thanks in advance! ~Bobb Shields |

In addition to that I added a codeline in
/source/ext/kontor/IoS/framework/java/de/ios/framework/db2/
DBTransactionServer.java
I added the line Class.forName("org.postgresql.Driver") because there was a
change in the postgresql-jar for the version 7.4.x (I think since version 7.x
but I'm not sure). See the code below.
private final Connection getNewConnection( boolean initMetaData )
throws de.ios.framework.basic.ServerException
{
Connection dbcon;
try {
if (Debug.DBG)
Debug.println( Debug.SQLINFO, this, "Getting 1 new Connection...");
try {
if (dbConFactory != null)
dbcon = dbConFactory.createConnection();
else{
Class.forName("org.postgresql.Driver"); // Package-path for
Postgres 7.4.x
dbcon = DriverManager.getConnection(dbUrl, dbUid, dbPassword);}
} catch (SQLException s) {
if ( (databaseName != null) && ....
What are your plans with Linux Kontor?
Are you planing to keep the project alive?
Where will you post the fixes and infos ? On the sourceforge page ?
Regards,
Marco

Hi Ingo, thank you for your posting. It works!!! There was a little mistake in the Postgres.sql file, but I fixt it. The rest was how described in your mail. Now I had the opportunity to evaluate it. If we decide to use Kontor I will mail to this list. Viele Gr=FC=DFe, Frank |

I took two weeks until it works. I was intresting on the data-structure of the sql-database. My idea ist to use kontor and write missing parts with GNUe-komponents. Unfortunately, GNUe is under heavy development and we have to wait at least a year. :-( I had to make a lot changes in kontor. I can't imagine that it worked "out of the box" on a machnine somewhere. Here my experiences: 0. Download my kontor-source from www.olvenstedt.de/kontor_20040525.tgz . Note that source has a lot of changes. Use it only for experimental! I have never printed something or stored some articles. It is verry, verry probably that some errors occur. I got a lot SQL-errors (missing fields and other simple things). Everytime it occour, i had to fix sql-installation script. More later. Extract it for the first time the source on the same place like on my machine. If everything is running you can change it. Extract to /source /ext /kontor /IoS /CVS /htdocs ...etc. 1. I uses JDK 1.4 (j2sdk-1_4_2-nb-3_5_1-bin-linux.bin downloaded from SUN) Installed in the default /opt/j2sdk_nb/j2sdk1.4.2/. There is a class Iterator in kontor and Sun impemented a interface Iterator, starting from version 1.4. I had to rewrite the code to full qualify all occurence of Iterator. (Iterator => de.ios.framework.basic.Iterator) 2. Download from postgresql.org the fitting "postgresql.jar". The name is slightliy different. In my case pg74.213.jdbc3.jar. Move/rename it to /usr/share/java/postgresql.jar. 3. I use debian. I had to install (apt-get install package) - postgresql - postgresql-contrib (this includes the used refint.so) 4. - create a user "postgres" with password "post" as (system-account? - i am not sure) _and_ postgresql-user ("createuser postgres -P") - "createuser kontor -P" mit password kontor - cd /source/ext/kontor/IoS/kontor/bin/tools - "createdb iosdb" - "./createDB.sh postgres post" - if you see an error: read carfully the message, "dropdb iosdb", and start again on "createdb iosdb" - cd .. - ./kontor.server - now the server should run - cd /source/ext/kontor/IoS/kontor/bin/tools - "./createMenu.sh etc/kontor.en" - "./kontor.menu" Now, the client should run, login as admin mit password admin Additional hints: A central point of the installation is /source/ext/kontor/IoS/kontor/sql/PostgreSQL/kontor.create.sql. I had the most problem here. I had the feeling, that Adabas is case sensitive and postgre is case intensive. So i removed any CamelCase. One nessesary change in java was: sTableName to sTableName.toLowerCase() !! I compiled the project with a "make" from kontor/IoS/framework/java _and_ kontor/IoS/kontor/java (the tgz-file, mentioned above, is alread compiled) But i needed some *.class they not exists as *.java! ./IoS/framework/classes/de/ios/framework/db2/DBObjectHashCode.class ./IoS/kontor/classes/de/ios/kontor/cl/main/StammdatenP.class ./IoS/kontor/classes/de/ios/kontor/cl/main/BuchhaltungP.class ./IoS/kontor/classes/de/ios/kontor/cl/main/FinanzP.class ./IoS/kontor/classes/de/ios/kontor/cl/main/MainP.class ./IoS/kontor/classes/de/ios/kontor/cl/main/VerkaufP.class ./IoS/kontor/classes/de/ios/kontor/cl/main/LagerP.class ./IoS/framework/classes/de/ios/framework/gui/VLP.class ./IoS/kontor/classes/de/ios/kontor/cl/main/StammdatenP.class ./IoS/kontor/classes/de/ios/kontor/cl/main/BuchhaltungP.class ./IoS/kontor/classes/de/ios/kontor/cl/main/FinanzP.class ./IoS/kontor/classes/de/ios/kontor/cl/main/AuswertungP.class I simple moved it from the bin-distribution. All classes end with a P. Perhaps there is a way to create the classes? Any Idea? Look also in the outdated installation-pdf on kontor-homepage. Also download the old homepage. There are some hints too. Thank you also to http://www.bytesitter.de/modules.php?op=modload&name=Sections&file=index&req=listarticles&secid=1 Unfortunately, your installation-script does not work for me, but some good hints i got.
