Hi,
we are a lot of people using a lot of data with always the same problem. Where is this file I know I wrote somewhere on a disk or could still be on my drives (local and network).
A friend of mine is using a windoz program I thing it must be develop under linux. When this program is open he can see all the backups (sorted by disk/drive or file type or tree, ...).
What I propose to you is adapting komparator to be able to do all those new thinks we really need and which will enhance considerely komparator to become the best of program archive/backup. Thanks for that.
Idea to develop :
- komparator (in its archive/backup idea) need to register all the file name/date/size and files trees in a database (make you format choice) to be able to quickly know where is the file I search to.
- let a daemon run (when started linux or not : put this choice in a settings) that automatically register all the user saved new created or modified files (eventually if you need is necessary the user can put a list of disk and folder that the daemon must check : settings).
- put a setting to know if all new created or modified file must be register or not.
- I don't still use komparator to see if it can solve my actual problem ; I burned CD 9 month ago. 2 month ago I just burn DVD and I présume I burn then twice some data. I files was registered in a database I was able to burn only those new data and then gain some place. Now if I need to search a file I don't know where is the last (on CD or DVD) and I need to check on both. If files (name/size) are registered in a database I can quickly make a search to see where is the last (it could also be on a shared drive actually used by a colleague).
Then as you see it is possible to really make komparator as a perfect archiving program. Oh I also forget to tell you that it could be interresting to also be able to propose to a user to burn some data by taking old files on a media. I explain : I have a tree where all the data was burned on a CD. Now I create so many files that I can just be written on a DVD. Then it can be interesting to propose the user to split it for both CD or to burn it on a DVD. ANd then launching K3b with the desired path to burn.
Wouaw it could becomes really the best program we really need.
Sincerely thanks if you can enhance komparator with those so needed facilities.
Have a nice day,
Miguipda ;-)
