I return to check the stats for knockoff every month or so and I'm always supprised that its still getting downloads. Its a pitty the game isn't better really - oneday I might re-write it and get someone todo good art work but I doubt it. It was great fun to code, and I'm very proud of it so I don't mind the fact its not perfect. I might create a new project for my next game if it turns out nicely, but I'll keep KO around for nostalgia value :D
Ok, its done ... like forever! I got a job yesterday morning so its very good timeing that I'm finishing it up now as I'll have almost no free time for a while. Currently you can play all the mods, have 2 players on a single PC, create and join network servers and pretty much everything I'd every planned plus way more. There are only 2 things that don't work as well as I'd like and they are: Network Lag is still to high, if KO has more than about 5 players connected to a server it may freeze and/or die. Both of those are networking problems which I know basically nothing about and would have to work very hard to fix them. Its the rule of dimishing returns, while I might want to work on these issues the amount of effort required is way to high for it to be usefull. KO turned out millions of times better than I ever invisaged back in June of 2003. It even contributed to my getting a job, as thats how ndWare found me (through my website). Thanks heaps to all the people who've helped me along the way - there are lots of you so I won't list ppl here as I'll forget most of them.... read more
As the subject says v2.0.2a is out! Its got almost everything the single player version had, but now its networked. I'm pretty sure that soon I'll have put back all the disabled freatures such as the mods CTF, KOTH and koRacer as well as AI and whatever else is left. I've disabled the downloads for v2.0.1a cos it wasn't really very good so I hope not to many people got that!
As with all previouse network editions a server is automatically started when you create a game, and to join a server, clients should type "connect IP" (without quotes) into the console where IP is the IP address or the host name of the server (ie. "connect 192.168.0.4" or "connect example.com"). A nice pretty user interface will be created for it soon, and will be avaliable in future releases (this is just an alpha release remember).
We have a network edition :D
v2.0.1 alpha is out! This is technically the 2nd network release but the first one was [a] bad and [b] just to prove it was being worked on. This release however should actually work decently. I've had to remove some of the game mods (CTF, KOTH and koRacer) because they no longer work, but they will be fixed in later updates. A server is automatically started when you create a game, and to join a server type "connect IP" (without quotes) where IP is the actual IP address of the host or dommain name (ie. "connect 192.168.0.4" or "connect example.com"). Thats really about it. A nice pretty user interface will be created for it soon, and will be avaliable in future releases (this is just an alpha release remember).... read more
Finally got the source into the CVS repository. Taken me a while to get round to it but its there now! I didn't put in all the old versions of the source code since it would've taken weeks to sort it all out, but I may host some old zips oneday.
Also I added v1.8.5 of the souce to the CVS repository so if anyone wants the singleplayer version they can get it, but all future updates will have the netcode version which has also been added!
This is not a big update from 1.8.4, but as this is probably the last update befor I release the very alpha version of the net KO think its worth putting out. Wish me luck with my netcode!
I just finished uploading some of the older versions of KO including v1.0.0 and v1.6.0. I wasn't originally planning on doing it, but I figured that I'd upload them for completeness and also to give people and idea of how far KO has come. I maybe also upload old versions of the sourcecode however I don't think i'll end up entering those into the CVS repository because its just sooo much trouble to get it right.... read more
knockoff v1.8.4 has been uploaded. This is currently the latest stable release avaliable. I'll be adding all my old versions of KO just for the sake of completeness so people can see how its changed and what its become soon too. Hopefully even though I've only applied to sf.net late in the process you'll still be able to see the progression!
knockoff got accepted - how sweet is that! Ok, I'm not sure why it wouldn't get accepted, but I'm still supprised. I'll be setting it all up over the next few days and working out how to do everything, but I'm hopefull that I'll have a nice section of code and my latest release up pretty soon! Wish me luck!
