Kindle Mate is a program that helps Kindle users to sync, import and manage their clippings and vocabulary builder words on computer. Kindle Mate has been made to make your reading and language learning easier.

First Time to Run Kindle Mate
Kindle Mate is Windows compatible and depends on some components to run properly. In most cases, your Windows system is ready to run Kindle Mate, especially for Windows 7 and above. Typically, you install/extract Kindle Mate and get it running. If you fail to start the program, make sure you have .NET Framework 4.0 Client Profile and Visual C++ Runtime Library 2010 or higher installed and then run the program again. Please check our FAQ for the most common issues.

Quick Start

Kindle Mate is intuitive and easy to use. Connect Kindle with your computer via USB cable. Kindle Connected icon will show on the menu bar indicating your Kindle is recognized and well connected. Click the icon or press F2 to start your first Auto-Sync from Connected Kindle.
Now all your clippings and vocabulary words will show in Kindle Mate, organized and locally and securely stored. Actually that’s all you need to get fully started. You are encouraged to explore the menus and functionalities to become a guru.

Upgrade From an Old Version

All data and settings are stored in Kindle Mate data file titled ‘KM2.dat’. When a new version of Kindle Mate is released, unless there is a special upgrade instructions, all you need to do is to copy the data file KM2.dat into the new directory and run the new program.
Important: Starting from version 1.35, Kindle Mate for Windows no longer requires administrator privilege. Please make sure you have Read and Write permissions to your Kindle Mate folder, or there will be an error prompting lack of access privilege.

Auto-Sync from Connected Kindle (recommended)

This is the most common way for users to fully sync with their Kindle. Kindle Mate will automatically identify device type, model and locales, and then import Kindle clippings and vocabulary builder data as well if applicable into Kindle Mate. Unlike any other tools, no specific settings or configurations are required at all. Click on Kindle Connected icon or access main menu File – Auto-Sync from Connected Kindle or simply press shortcut F2.

Customize Clippings Copying and Export Format

Kindle Mate supports copying or exporting Clippings and vocabulary as plain text files in custom formats, or other external formats.

Customize Clippings Copy/Export Format

Go to Options > Customize Clippings Copy & Export Format to set the content and format (e.g., include/exclude serial numbers, clipping text, book authors, page numbers, dates). Define line breaks within clippings and between multiple clippings to fit your habits.
Use sorting options to organize records when copying/exporting multiple clippings (e.g., by date or book).

Merge Clippings Option: Combine related clippings into one record when exporting.

Supported Formats:
Kindle Raw Clippings Format: Matches the structure of Kindle’s My Clippings.txt for backup or sharing. Kindle Mate can recognize and import this format, making it good for data recovery or sharing with other users/tools.
Microsoft Excel Format: Export clippings to Excel for printing or further editing (e.g., convert to CSV/tab-separated text for tools like Anki or Pocket).
Microsoft Word Format (Version 1.35+): Export clippings to Word with an auto-generated table of contents (processing time may vary by the number of clippings and computer speed).
Requires Office software installed.

Customize Vocabulary Copy/Export Format (Text/Excel/Anki, etc.)

Kindle Mate supports copying or exporting your Kindle Vocabulary Builder in custom formats. In Options > Customize Vocabulary Copy & Export Format, choose whether to include usage examples and definitions (you must download definitions first).

Custom Export Options:

Fields included: Serial number, word, lemma (e.g., "abilities" → "ability"), usage (context from Kindle books, showing all uses across synced books), book author, date added, and definitions (download via "Manage Vocabulary Definitions" (shortcut F12)).
Third-Party Vocabulary Formats: Export to formats for Youdao Dictionary, Kingsoft Dictionary, Eudic Dictionary, or Bing Dictionary (e.g., save as Youdao XML format for use in multiple apps).

Anki Flashcard Format:

Export as Anki decks (enable HTML format when importing to Anki). Customize front/back content in Options > Customize Vocabulary Copy & Export Format > Anki Style.

Office Excel Format:

Export all vocabulary fields into columnar Excel files (requires Excel installed).

Edit Clippings and Vocabulary in Edit Mode

(Available since Version 1.35+)
In Kindle Mate, double-click or press Enter on clippings, notes, vocabulary words, usages, or definitions in the Reading Pane to enter Edit Mode. Use this to:
Delete extra content in clippings.
Edit existing clippings/notes (e.g., add more details).
Fix misidentified lemmas in the vocabulary builder (changes will sync back to the Kindle).
Edit vocabulary usage examples or definitions (definitions only save locally for viewing/export, not to the Kindle).

Kindle Activity Profile

Location: File menu – Kindle Activity Profile . Shortcut: F6
This feature is to get some usage and trending statistics by analyzing your Kindle clippings and Vocabulary data. It’s mainly based on your timeline of highlighting, making notes and looking up a word in Kindle.*
