    Hi

Has anyone else seen the update check on KeePass failing since 2.49 became available?

I upgraded from the previous version. I'd always had "Tools > Options > Advanced > Check for update at KeePass startup" checked, and immediately on starting 2.49 it began showing a failed message for the check. The actual function of KeePass itself didn't appear to be affected once I closed this window.

I completely uninstalled 2.49, scrubbed out any leftover registry keys, powered down, powered up, and re-installed 2.49. Now I don't get the check failure happening at startup, but I do get the same message if I force an update check from Help > Check for Updates.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

Maybe it's an internet issue. Are you having trouble getting to any other sites?

    Hi there

Thanks for the very prompt response.

I've no apparent symptoms with other s/w or sites. I've also just re-tried the Update Check after having switched off my VPN - no change, still fails. The previous image I'd posted referred only to my KeePass 2.49 installation. I'd stripped out all the plugins I usually use as part of my investigations. When I re-install them I get the window attached here - some pass OK, some fail with the same message as KeePass itself, and some are unknown. This is pretty much the same pattern as I'd always had.

Uh - I should have checked something else earlier.
I have just re-installed 2.48.1, then 2.47, then 2.46, and they all show the same symptoms that I thought had arrived with 2.49.
Clearly something else in my set-up has altered affecting KeePass' ability to acquire the update information.
    Now then ... what else have I changed/installed/uninstalled/re-configured recently ... ?

Apologies to Paul and all other readers - this one appears to be on me.

The update file is here: https://www.dominik-reichl.de/update/version2x.txt.gz
    Can you open that file?

    cheers, Paul

Oh - curioser and curioser ...

Initially I couldn't open that link with either of my two main browsers, Vivaldi and Firefox. They gave similar error messages e.g.
Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at www.dominik-reichl.de.

    • The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
    • If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network connection.
    • If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

However I then switched off my VPN (NordVPN) and both browsers successfully displayed the file contents when refreshed. I switched NordVPN on again, refreshed, and the same lack of connection messages appeared.

I repeated this with KeePass itself (switch VPN off, Check for Updates) and I got a successful response. This is not what happened yesterday when I posted about this same test. Switching NordVPN back on again produced the repeatable errors.

Then I configured NordVPN split tunneling so that KeePass.exe was now in a list of apps excluded from the secure VPN (it is the only app in that list). Restarted both NordVPN and KeePass, but no luck - same old failure message.

As a last check, with little hope of success, I tried my Android phone. I also have NordVPN on it and Vivaldi browser. The test file opened immediately! No changes were needed to settings anywhere.

I think we can now be fairly certain that whatever issue is causing this minor upset is definitely buried in my Win10 PC. Unless you have some easy and simple ideas please don't feel you need to waste any more of your time on this. I appreciate your responses so far.

    Regards

KeePass uses .NET calls to access web sites, so it may not be KeePass.exe calling the URL, although it should be.
Can you exclude the update URL from the split tunneling?

It is possible the URL has filters to prevent script kiddies using VPNs to attack and you have fallen foul of the filter. Try changing the outlet IP on the VPN / check the IP on a spam list? (cleantalk.org etc)

Fantastic! This is support and customer service on an Alpha++ Supreme Priority Level 1 grade! And it's not even a KeePass problem!

I tinkered with a few switches under the hood of the VPN.
First I hopped around the world, changing the output IP (South Africa, Malaysia, Chile, Israel, Singapore). No good. Same problem.
Next, the split tunneling control - this only permits me to specify apps or running services, not URLs. So no change there.
But then, working on the ideas you outlined, I found a bonus 'feature' which I don't recall ever having changed before. NordVPN has an additional layer of security they call CyberSec which, in their words, is intended to "block ads and malicious websites". I switched that off, since I already have ad blocking in my browser and a separate virus/security app. And that's when everything started to kick in to life!

Anyway, you now have a fully up-to-date KeePass user again who can't wait to tell others about how good it and your support is.

Thank you for all your guidance.
