    Hi,

embarassing as it is, I have to admit I can't open my kdbx file anymore. The only explanation I have is that I managed to type my master password incorrectly twice (I already tried enabling the "windows user" checkbox, and I'm absolutely sure I didn't include a key file by accident).

Now I still have the old file with my passwords and the browser's password cache, so it's not a complete disaster, but it took me a whole afternoon to collect and enter all my passwords, so I'm not ready to give up just yet. Since I know which word I wanted to type, I have a limited set of password candidates. And I already found the keecracker tool (http://keecracker.mbw.name/), which takes words from stdin and tries them against a kdbx file. What I haven't found so far is a program that will generate, for a given word, all words with a small editing (Levenshtein, Hamming or whatever) distance as an input. Is there anybody who knows where to find such a program?

If you have any ideas for other approaches I could try, I am always open for suggestions. Is there possibly a known bug or something I might have done wrong while creating the database? I didn't do anything fancy - just created some groups and filled the entries. I'm using version 2.36. And a new DB-File I created for test purposes is working fine.

Thanks in advance for your help!

No known bugs, but you should double-check you're trying to open the correct file, especially since you say you created a test database. The number of incorrect password entries is irrelevant after database creation, to be clear, are you saying you may have typed something other than you intended when you created the database, and this is a new database?

Also enable viewing of the password as you type with the button beside the master password field, to make sure it's not a simple keyboard problem or something.

      Thanks for your reply!

Yes, other than a bug, this is the only explanation I can think of. I created the DB, filled it with all my entries, closed it, and the next day I couldn't open it anymore. And I am sure I am not mixing up the different files.

Also enable viewing of the password as you type with the button beside the master password field, to make sure it's not a simple keyboard problem or something.

I also realised that - afterwards. So I am sure I am now typing the word that I actually meant, but I didn't know this when I created the DB.

OK, if no one else replies to my thread, I guess I'll have to do it myself... ;-) Since I couldn't find what I was looking for, i.e.

a program that will generate, for a given word, all words with a small editing (Levenshtein, Hamming or whatever) distance

I wrote one myself. I have to say it's a bit of a letdown if you work an a program for a whole afternoon, then it finds what you are looking for in less than a second and it's unlikely you will use it ever again. But at least I don't have to recreate the database. (It turns out I omitted a single letter in the password; if I had known this in advance...) And I can confirm it was my fault and not a bug in KeePass.

Is there any interest in such a program? It takes a word w and a number n as input and generates all the words that can be obtained from w by up to n modifications (insertions, deletions, or swaps of neighbouring letters).

My issue! I have a pinched nerve causing severe pain from my right elbow down to my right hand. It is the second time this has occurred in the past 18 months. I had a 90 day supply at two 25mg/day of Lyrica left from the original incident. I started using them about two weeks ago (sadly to no effect yet) and woke up yesterday and can not recall my master password. I literally have amnesia at this point, which is hard to believe since I've logged into KP several times/month for at least a half dozen years. I complicated the issue by spending an hour trying different combinations and I believe I'll never recall now. I don't use KP to generate passwords, I just use as a secure folder where I store login information for some sites that I usually don't visit often. So am I screwed? Thank you!

Does the program do the decryption or just give you a list of words?

      cheers, Paul

It only generates the words. But together with the KeeCracker program (link above) you can run your tests unattended.

There is no back door / way in. You need the exact master key.
Hopefully you'll remember if you leave it for a day.

    cheers, Paul
