I thought I had memorized the master password (to open Keepass database). Obviously I have a faulty memory! Is there any way to retrieve the database without the master password?

Unfortunately no. But don't lose hope, the password may come to you once you relax. I suggest you write down each password you try so you don't get frustrated retrying the same password over and over.
Also reveal each password attempt so that you can verify what you tried, and make sure not to add a whitespace at the beginning or end of each attempt.

I have seen estmates of the time it might take to brute force break the password on previous forum posts but cannot recall the figures. I seem to remember that for a non trivial password it would take many centuries to break using the most powerful computers in the world.
