#15 Use Gmails ATOM feed?

No

Have you considered using the ATOM feed (located at https://mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom for ALL accounts, including Google Apps) instead of logging in to the normal Gmail interface? It uses normal HTTP authentication and should therefore be much simpler to implement (while also being more safe for future changes to Gmail). I know that the "search for" setting might probably be a show stopper, but how many people really use it? If you ask Google nicely, they might be able to implement such a feature in the feed, too. I can see in the code that you're using the "older version" interface (ui=1) for checking mail, and that interface will probably not be along forever...

I used KGmailNotifier for a few days (since KCheckGmail was broken, I've fixed it now, see the Patches section) but realized that it sucks compared to KCheckGmail since it doesn't show the number of new mails in the icon. However, it continued to work when KCheckGmail (and checkgmail) didn't. That's quite bad when it comes to binary packages in distros like Ubuntu...

we have talked about that and some code reorganising will be done. But adding atom feeds support is not a priority.

"Google" is not a person, and I've sent an email about adding more features to the atom interface or even adding a better one, but never got a reply. They now provide some features via jabber, but... I'm not sure if we really want that.

the parser needs to be reviewed before changing that, and it will.

That kind of changes doesn't happen _that_ often; and once it is fixed you can always request the new version to be backported (already happened at least once for kcheckgmail).

BTW, there won't be a minor release fixing GAP4D support as it is currently "unsupported". But there will soon be a release with major changes and fixes.
