Update Sept 9, 2015
Many problems not related to the MacBook during installation occured as Trusty repository was unknown signature so I have been able recover by doing the following steps on the hardwired MacBook .
There was a message that some applications were not installed correctly.
First I did these command in a terminal window.
System may need removal of install DVD/CD as repository when rebooted with out DVD/CD in drive.
sudo apt-add-repository -r (TBD - system dependent)
Get the complete repository list of pakages.
sudo apt-update
Next I added Synaptic from online repository.
sudo apt-get install synaptic
Exit the terminal window.
The package manager program is found in menu at
PROGRAMS > APPLICATIONS > SYSTEM > PACKAGE MANAGEMENT >
Synaptic Package Manager
I find it easier to see versions and broken installs with Synaptic.
I search in Synaptic to see status as exclamation mark and double click to mark for completing installation.
Then do apply.
NOTE:
Properties of highligted name from the installed packages shows depedency, release notes and files included.
For example:
I systematically went through starting with the AMATEUR RADIO category and used double clicking on exclamation point status in first column to repair incomplete installation from DVD / CD.
Here is to how to use Synaptic to add or remove packages.
For example, on an Intel MacBook you need to install the b43 package to fix the wifi need for proprietary driver in repository.
Search for b43 and double click if status is empty.
Then search for network and status installed.
Then I double click to remove network-manager which conflicts with wicd causing wifi connect to fail.
**Note: Add wlan0 to wicd preferances and refresh to reveal wifi possibilities.

When V17 was released, there were no errors about repositories being signed by unknown keys. There are two of those today, and they are for the Fldigi and Chirp-daily repositories. I plan to have a remedy for the V18 release. I have not yet found a remedy for the upcoming release, but when I do, I'll be sure to post it. It appears to be safe to simply hit enter when that popup box appears in the smart package manager.
I loaded up the stock V17 ISO into Virtualbox and installed the synaptic package manager. I am unable to find any exclamation points for incomplete or improperly installed packages. I tried "Custom Filters...Broken" and came up empty. I also tried this on the code that will ultimately become the V18 ISO, and also came up empty.
Did you install a bunch of new stuff on top of the stock software collection? If so, I'm wondering if that somehow introduced these issues. Even so, it sounds like the synaptic package manager made it easier for you to find these issues vs. the smart package manager.
Also, it is a known issue that the network-manager conflicts with wicd. This remedy is listed in the RELEASE_NOTES under "Wireless Configuration".
