There should be nothing different in the setup of WSJT-X on AHRL or any other version of Linux. In case you hadn't found it, here is a pointer to the most excellent WSJT-X documentation:
No other mate I just reinstalled your software coz Windows give me @#$^&*)

Have you used your FT897D with any digital mode software on any operating system? I'm asking because the first step is to properly connect the radio to the computer. I don't know if you have attempted to do this, or if you have been successfully. I'm trying to figure out where to start to help you. I am hoping that other people with an FT897D will also offer to help.

I'm guessing that there is some type of interface box, perhaps a Signalink, RigBlaster, or similar, that is used to connect the radio to the computer. I'd bet that it shows up as a USB device on the computer. Please describe this interconnect.

I have a Yaesu FT-897D. It's currently packed, so I can't test out the settings, but my memory of how to configure it is:
Configure the CAT serial port. I'm sure there are guide documents you could search for on how to find and configure the serial port on Linux. As far as settings, I used 19,200 bps, 8-N-1. 4,800 bps might be more reliable. You'll need to configure these settings in both the radio and in the software interface for CAT to work. The settings must match on each side.
Configure the audio interface. I used the SignaLink USB.
I found the FT-897D CAT and audio interface to be somewhat fragile. I had trouble with RF feedback in the CAT/audio interfaces locking the radio into transmit. Setting the transmit audio level with the SignaLink was also tricky to avoid splatter and interference to other users. I tried using my 897 at Field Day one year, and was asked not to do that again by my fellow hams.
I moved to a KX-3 with a TASCAM 2x2 USB audio interface, and then to the IC-7300 and I'm much happier with digital modes with the more modern radios. It was much easier to adjust transmit audio with the TASCAM 2x2.
WSJT-X configuration is identical on all three platforms, Linux, Windows, and macOS. The only difference is how the serial ports are named by the system.

I don't own an FT897D, so I wouldn't know how to specifically guide you. Do you have other digital mode software, in Linux, working with this radio?
