Hi Everybody,

Many people seem to be confused at the password prompt, when they see a single vertical bar, and nothing is echoed when they type in the password.

I appreciate that for some people, this is a security feature, while others are more comfortable with seeing a single asterisk for each character typed.

For version 24, I'm going to turn on the echo character when typing the password. I've added this line to /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources: xlogin*echoPasswd: true

Look in the file....you'll see it. This tool is playing with the text formatting due to the asterisk.

Don't panic...it will not actually echo your password. It will print a placeholder character (an asterisk) for each character that you type.

If you prefer the original behavior (nothing echoed while typing the password), either remove the line or change "true" to "false". Be sure to save a copy of the file before you edit it, just in case. Logout/login is sufficient to see if the update is working as desired.
