It is better to think of Katta as a shard management system. Katta handles
the distribution of shards to machines and also moves queries to those
shards and results back.
It is certainly most common to use Katta in the case where shards are Lucene
indexes and the queries are Lucene queries, but this is not required at all.
There are examples of how to do Lucene queries in the Katta code base, but
other than those examples, Katta doesn't even depend on Lucene. It is up to
you to define what kind of analyzer and search you would like to do.
