Funny. I've just done a check with Kubuntu (because my normal system
seems to be resistant against a bunch of issues other people have).
I've tested screen saver and powerdevil (includes display power
management) inhibition with KDE 4.5, and it worked (note that this
stuff is only inhibited when a) playback is in progress, b) not being
paused and c) not being minimised).

As indicated, this should happen automatically. Which kde / kaffeine
version are you using?
