I did make a recording with overlapping subtitles, but gxine simply failed to display subtitles in the recording. However I managed to get xine-ui to display them and the overlaps are there. I am off to the xine mailing lists. (VLC did display subtitles too. The timing of the subtitles in VLC was different, resulting in no overlaps. The VLC timing fit the soundtrack better.
