[kaffeine-user] what is "automatic"?

I got me a usb audio device which gives me trouble.

Among the hardships: kaffeine starts, I go DVB, it says "alsa failed, 
switching to automatic" - sound then actually plays but voume slider has 2 
seconds lag and I don't know *which* sound path it actually uses.
How do I figure?
