Folks: Well, it's obvious I haven't been working on K-3D; what has become increasingly clear to me is that I won't be contributing for the foreseeable future. It's never easy to let go of something you've put so much effort into, but it is definitely time for me. Thankfully, Bart Janssens has volunteered to take my place as maintainer. I wish Bart, and K-3D, every success. Cheers, Tim |

Folks: As I've mentioned a couple of times now, I'd like to get out of the business of making all the decisions for the K-3D project; towards that end I've asked Daniel Matthews, Joe Crawford, and Bart Janssens to join me as voting members of the "K-3D Board". Since the four of us are already the "official" K-3D representatives for the Software Freedom Conservancy, this seemed like a good time to take the next step and start to put K-3D's project governance on a slightly more formal basis - towards that end, the Board will be responsible for setting project policies, allocating assets, and approving expenditures. Cheers, Tim |

Folks: Today, K-3D officially became a member of the Software Freedom Conservancy. You can read more about the Conservancy at http://conservancy.softwarefreedom.org/ and you can see the announcement at http://conservancy.softwarefreedom.org/news/2009/may/27/k3d/ ... among other things, this means that there are many new options for donations, described here: http://www.k-3d.org/wiki/Donations I'm excited to be joining, it's a long-overdue step in K-3D's development as a project. Cheers, Tim |

Dear Subscriber: We are very happy with the results of the beginning of Google Summer of Code. We received many very good proposal from students all over the world. Google will provide 4 stipends for the K-3D organization. This means quite a lot for K-3D! Currently the students are submitting the code the presented for their proposals. These promising projects are: * An Integrated Shader Designer - Alexander Curtis * File import/export plugins - Carlos Caballero * NURBS Modeling Tools - Carsten Haubold * GPU-Based processing for K-3D filters - Evan Lezar * OGRE 3D Game engine integration - Mattia Barbiero * K-3D - Physics Engine Integration - Wendy Langer You may count 6 projects, because we couldn't get enough slot as good proposals. Although this 2 students are interested in following their projects, but with less time for them. If you would like to share your opinion on the projects subject you may contact the team through the development mailing list or the forum. Release of 0.7.3: ----------------- Bart released the last K-3D version recently. You may want to check it's new improvements. http://www.k-3d.org/wiki/Download Next newsletter we will detail the progress of this student and probably a new release of K-3D with their changes will be released. Sincerely, The K-3D Team |

Dear Subscriber: Thanks for subscribing, this is the second newsletter from the K-3D Announce Mailing List! We intended to send this letter every two week, but it seems it was too ambitious. We will try sending one every month. Bug day ------- Mimicking the idea from Gentoo project, the team scheduled a "Bug Day" for next Saturday (26th January). Here is Tim's explanation: "The idea is to schedule a 24-hour period during which all our efforts are focused on eliminating bug. Because it's a full day, there are no issues around coordination between timezones. Everyone simply takes whatever time they would normally spend on K-3D, and devotes it to bug-fixing. We would keep in touch via IM during the day to coordinate. Some people might coordinate to avoid overlapping efforts, while others might collaborate on a particularly difficult bug. The more experienced developers would be on hand to provide advice and get more people doing basic debugging on their own - which isn't difficult, and significantly improves bug reports." "Everyone (users and developers) is encouraged to participate. More details as we get closer ..." Video Tutorials --------------- Joaquín Duo (me :D) made a Christmas tree tutorial. Although it's not finished yet it a good demonstration of modeling. It has some issues with the SDS on top of the tree. http://k-3d.org/wiki/Video_Tutorials/Christmas_Tree_Modeling Sincerely, The K-3D Team ------------ If you would like to make any suggestion or send feedback about this newsletter please do not hesitate contacting us trough the forum: http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=34831 Or through the developers mailing list https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/k3d-development |
