The -D option is a part of the JVM.  It is used to define system
properties.  They can be accessed with

java.lang.System.getProperty( "prop" )

PS.  Don't put a space between the '-' and the 'D' (as the above
example does).  My favorite is :

-Dpython.security.respectJavaAccessibility=false
