Hello, (Cross-posted by request from the python-tutor mailing list) I was reading about the new gcc 3.0 release, and something that caught my eye: """ The GNU Compiler for the Java Programming Language What is GCJ? GCJ is a portable, optimizing, ahead-of-time compiler for the Java Programming Language. It can compile: * Java source code directly to native machine code, * Java source code to Java bytecode (class files), * and Java bytecode to native machine code. Compiled applications are linked with the GCJ runtime, libgcj, which provides the core class libraries, a garbage collector, and a bytecode interpreter. libgcj can dynamically load and interpret class files, resulting in mixed compiled/interpreted applications. """ Would code get any significant speedup by going jython -> .class files -> native? Is it possible? And does jython compile under gcj? Thanks, Van |

This have been fixed in jython-2.1a1 where your example works. >Can someone explain this to me? When the python code theMap.setAttribute("crapKey", "crapVal") is executed jython is faced with a choice. Should it insert the the PyString instance that wraps "crapVal" or should it unwrap the string and insert the java.lang.String instance. If the method signature uses Object, jython always unwraps, which is why that works in you example. If the method signature used Serializable, Jython-2.0 would check and see that PyString implement Serializable (it does) and pass over the PyString wrapper. In Jython-2.1a1, a Serializable signature will cause unwrapping of string, ints, longs, floats, classes and instances. regards, finn |

You should still be able to download JDK1.1.8_007 from Sun, but I think 1.3.1 will work fine as long as you don't use any of the 1.2 specific classes (e.g. Swing, Collections, etc). > -----Original Message----- > From: ron greene [mailto:rg...@un...] > Sent: Monday, June 18, 2001 10:04 AM > To: jyt...@li... > Subject: [Jython-users] JDK recommendation > > > I'm a new would-be convert to Jython. I'm a new would-be convert to Jython. I've been developing a series of Java applets for physics education, and think that I would be more productive (eventually) with Jython. I got my Jython installation up and running with Sun's SDK 1.3.1, but then discovered (obviously should have thought about this) that what I produce with it does not run under IE 5.x or Netscape 4.7x, the two most common browsers for my audience. I need a recommendation for a 1.1 JDK that someone has actually tested with the above browsers. Thanks. ron greene |

Hi, I try to find a problem in my jythonized python code. It runs fine in python, but something's going wrong using the same .py-files with jython First I thought trying jython-2.1a1, maybe it works, but with jython-2.1a1 the compile fails saying 1 ./jpywork/repr.java:1: package org.python.core does not exist This I do not understand since, I put both jython-version in different directories. I checked the jython and jythonc scripts and teh registry, everywhere the dirs seem to be correct. Both use java 1.3. Does any of you have an idea, why the compiler does not seem to find jython.jar ? The NetBeans Java IDE has a Jython module which offers some support, including easy editing and running, though the IDE very resource-hungry (they recommend 256MB RAM). If you are wanting to incorporate Java classes then this would certainly be a good choice. www.netbeans.org --- Danny Ayers http://www.isacat.net >-----Original Message----- >From: jyt...@li... >[mailto:jyt...@li...]On Behalf Of Paolo >Tortora >Sent: 18 June 2001 08:41 >To: jyt...@li... >Subject: [Jython-users] IDE for Jython > > > > >I know there some interesting IDe for python. >For jython is slightly different beacuse it is java based. > >Anyway, does anyone know whether there is some IDE for jython ? > >Thank you. >Paolo. > > > >_______________________________________________ >Jython-users mailing list >Jyt...@li... >http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/jython-users |

I know there some interesting IDe for python. For jython is slightly different beacuse it is java based. Anyway, does anyone know whether there is some IDE for jython ? Thank you. Paolo. |

Sorry for the crosspost, but I am not sure if Jython or BSF is the place to ask. I have a server application that uses BSF with Tomcat to do some custom scripting (Jython). When the scripts reside in what Tomcat considers the root (working?) directory, everything runs just fine. The scripts just get executed by their name with no path information required. I need to move these scripts into sub-directories under that root. There is no problem invoking a script in any sub-directory, but the script cannot 'see' the other required scripts in the same directory for it's imports. The executed script is looking for the other scripts in the previously mentioned root directory no matter where it resides. How to force the Jython interpreter to have another working directory on a per-session basis? Thanks. -- Scott Knight mailto:sc...@sc... |

Hi, So far I think Jython is pretty cool... but I've got a problem/question... First off, here's my sample code: "MyMap.java" =========================================== import java.io.Serializable; import java.util.HashMap; public class MyMap { private HashMap hash = new HashMap(10); public void MyMap() { } public void setAttribute(String key, Object attr) { hash.put(key, attr); } public Object getAtrribute(String key) { return hash.get(key); } public static void main(String[] args) { Properties props = new Properties(); props.setProperty("jython.home", "/jython"); PythonInterpreter.initialize(System.getProperties(),props,new String[0]); MyMap theMap = new MyMap(); theMap.setAttribute("myAttr", "myAttr is cool"); PythonInterpreter interp = new PythonInterpreter(); interp.set("theMap", theMap); interp.exec("print theMap.getAtrribute(\"myAttr\")"); interp.exec("theMap.setAttribute(\"crapKey\", \"crapVal\")"); MyMap newMap = (MyMap)interp.get("theMap", MyMap.class); System.err.println("GotBack: " + (String)newMap.getAtrribute("crapKey")); } } ======================================== This works just fine, as intended by printing the output: myAttr is cool GotBack: crapVal My problem is that I really need the method void setAttribute(String key, Object attr) to be this: void setAttribute(String key, Serializable attr) But when I make that change, rather than the expected output, I get: myAttr is cool Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ClassCastException: org.python.core.PyString at com.partnet.prototypes.mops.unittest.MyMap.main(MyMap.java:72) Can someone explain this to me? I really need to restrict the input objects to be of type Serializable. Thanks, James |

HI, I have successfully used CPython's imp.load_module() in the past to load Python code on the fly. This has been invaluable for lots of reasons including the ability to introduce modules dynamically into a running system. The same code will not work with Jython because Jython lacks the imp.load_module() method, and the comment for the module states that the methods implemented there are those that, in the writer's words, "can" be implemented under J(P)ython. Is this true? I would appreciate any help in doing what the CPython load_module() provides under Jython. I'm sure that my lack of knowledge of Jython's import code is the problem - there's probably a solution so easy that I'm not even seeing it. The archives don't seem to have anything related. The import-sig postings haven't helped yet. On bended knee (!), Gerry |

The solution is to change the name of one or more of them. It is also conceivable that you have class Foo : def func( self ) : class Bar : def __init__( self ) : pass which would cause the same problem, when nested_scopes are used. If you show the rest of the code, then it will be more obvious what is really causing the warning message, and it will be easier to suggest alternative coding/naming styles. -D |

I have an application that uses swing and jdbc and works quite well under jython. I would like to create a jar file of that application. I can get jythonc to run to completion without errors, but I cannot run the application. (output attached) I'm sure I'm missing something basic. Here's my first class (i.e. the one I use to start it all). are there any examples or documentation of using jythonc to build an application? |

Hi, I'm new to Python & Jython but am wondering whether anyone had looked into using Jython with the CLDC+profiles, or had any idea of the chances of interoperability. Cheers, Danny. --- Danny Ayers http://www.isacat.net |

I found the following tip on www.javaworld.com some time ago that I use all the time. It's a static class that invokes a browser like so BrowserControl.displayURL("http://www.javaworld.com"); The nice thing about it is that if there is a running instance then it will use that browser also it works on multiple platforms. Source code and the article can be found here http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/javatips/jw-javatip66.html Shouldn't be any work at all just compile the class, import it and call the function from within Jython.
