Does anybody see any solution ? No. Maybe you can find a design which does not require that XMLElement is both a text and a jdom Element. Perhaps the __tojava__ method is usefull as it allow any python object to be coerced into any other java object when passed as an argument to a java method. regards, finn |

It is more than just a directory, it is also a package. A Package is a directory with a __init__.py file in it. When importing the package, the __init__.py file is executed. The jast/__init__.py file contains the line: from Statement import * and the Statement.py file do contain a Block class. So this is not the reason why jythonc is failing. You didn't tell which jvm you are using, but I bet it is MS jview. A bug somewhere (I put the blame on microsoft) prevent jview from running jythonc. I suggest that you install and use a JVM from javasoft instead. If you are trying to create browser applets you should use a JDK1.1, otherwise pick the JDK1.3. regards, finn |

Hi I've been experiencing Jython 2.0 - jythonc failing on Win NT without giving any indication that all is not well. c:>jythonc xyz.py eventually executes Compiler.compile(..), in which the line: code=jast.Block(pi.executeString(data)) causes the program to exit. I note in Tools\jythonc, jast is a directory which contains the directories Statement, Output and Modifier; there isn't one called Block, which according to this code I would have expected. As a result the program just exits (without warning). Anyone else have this directory? Thanks Tim |

running as root worked; from javax.swing import * worked as root, failed as my user. I did a "chmod a+x *.jar" to the files in the jdk1.3.1/lib path and it worked. I had previously done the same to jre/lib and that was not the answer. thanks for all your help, I new it was easy I just missed the obvious. -----Original Message----- From: John Goerzen [mailto:jgo...@co...] Sent: Friday, September 07, 2001 3:17 PM To: Sells, Fred Cc: 'jyt...@li...' You can get lots fancier, and check the context of the call, etc., but this should prevent the exit from occurring. Unfortunately, it will throw a SecurityException in the thread that calls System.exit(). This is reasonable (you don't want the installer thread processing any code after it tried to call exit, do you?), but it means the code that calls the installer will have to handle the exception, and that if something between your code and the call to System.exit() hides the exception, you don't know what will happen. I know some servlet containers, etc., make System.exit() a no-op, but I'm not sure how they manage that, and not sure you'd like that anyway: if beSafe: System.exit(1) doSomethingDangerous() :-) kb --- from java.security import * from java.lang import * class SM( SecurityManager ): def __init__( self, delegate ): self.allowExit = 0 self.delegate = delegate def checkExit( self, status ): if self.allowExit: SecurityManager.checkExit( self, status ) else: raise SecurityException( "Not allowed to exit at this time" ) def checkPermission( self, perm, context=None ): if self.delegate: #allow anything if we don't have a delegate if context: self.delegate.checkPermission( self, perm ) else: self.delegate.checkPermission( self, perm, context ) sec = System.getSecurityManager() sm = SM( sec ) System.setSecurityManager( sm ) try: System.exit(0) except: print "not allowed to exit" print "Did not exit" System.setSecurityManager( sec ) # replace original security manager, or could just set allowExit print "Trying to exit again" System.exit(0) print "You won't see this" --- |

A little help would be appreciated. :-) Using the demo example, I get c>jythonc TempConverter.py processing TempConverter c> and produces no more output, nor creates any files (using, for example, the --bean option). I'm on NT, have javac from Sun on the system, (which works on the command line, and is referenced in the registry file); Jython will runs normally. What do I need to set/check? The program isn't actually failing, just terminating!?! I can't find any references in teh FAQ and usegroup. Any insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Hi there! I'm facing a problem: I have a class (XMLDocument) which extends and implements javax.swing.text.Document. I have another class (XMLElement) which extends org.jdom.Element and implements javax.swing.text.Element. Well, in the XMLElement class I've got a getDocument() method that returns in one case a javax.swing.text.Document and in the other case a javax.swing.text.Document. Basically returning an XMLDocument should do the trick as it can be casted to both types. The problem is that jython uses intermediary Java code which chokes on this problem. Does anybody see any solution ? Cheers, -- Sebastien. |

Hi I'm new to Jython, experienced in Python, and am pioneering the latter's introduction to a large multinational with a large dregree of success. I now want to start on the Java guys .... Which leads me to the installation problem I have, the answer to which is I suspect trivial to a Jython expert. I'm using WinNT, and can run all the applet demos, etc in a browser on my machine. However, in trying to create a bean, or run Jython interactively, the response to >>>import java leads to the response ImportError: no module named java. Right, I say, lets put it on the equivalent of the pythonpath. Ah the docs helpfully say we need a Jython Registry .. in a file called "user.home"+'"/.jython" This kinda makes sense for unix. What does this mean in Windows (I can't have a file or directory containing a dot)? Secondly, given that I can get jython to read a registry file, what am I asking it to look for? java.py? java.jar? Any help you can provide would be most beneficial all round Thanks Tim ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hi folks I'd like to add the option to install jython in my jEdit plug in, which embeds jython into the editor. Although I can easily add jython.jar I would like to also includes the Lib dir. On the other hand users that already have jython may want no to install it by default, so an optional action is required. I'd like to be able to start the installer from inside the Java Program Is that possible? I've tried to do this jython-21a3.main(args) But this is not possible to compile. How can I proceed? The files in jython.jar (and other stuff) are required. They don't have to be in jython.jar however. see below. > Is there a way to run hw.class on a "empty" > machine ? Assuming 'emtpy' means no Jython, but yes Java... Yes. jythonc's --deep, --core, --all and --jar options let you stuff all required classes in a jar file, so deployment requires sending just one jar. see http://www.jython.org/docs/jythonc.html. > BTW is there a (reliable) list of py modules which work with jython ? Not really a formal list unless you consider those that are included with the Jython distribution. The guideline has been that if it comes with Jython, someone has tried it; If it doesn't, try it and maybe post your findings here (assuming that doesn't rely on C extensions). -rb > At 07:29 PM 9/5/2001 +0000, Finn Bock wrote: > >[Frank Immich] > > > >>Hello, > >>Pretty new to Jython, and already faced with a problem. > >>Anyway, looking over the demo programs that come with, and I can't get > the > >>example helloworld, or any other, > >>to work. Thanks...it's working now. But I still have some questions. I run jythonc hw.py ... the result is stored in jpywork. O.K.? to start hw.class I need all the other files:hw$_PyInner.class, hw$HelloWorld.class, hw.class...Right ? command: ..\jpywork>java -cp ".;..\jython.jar" hw So I can not run a hw.py-->hw.class via jythonc file without the jython.jar and all the other stuff ?? Is there a way to run hw.class on a "empty" machine ? BTW is there a (reliable) list of py modules which work with jython ? Thanks again...and sorry for my ignorance Ciao Frank At 07:29 PM 9/5/2001 +0000, Finn Bock wrote: >[Frank Immich] > >>Hello, >>Pretty new to Jython, and already faced with a problem. >>Anyway, looking over the demo programs that come with, and I can't get the >>example helloworld, or any other, >>to work. Perhaps you can get away with editing the jython.bat script to point to the jdk... but probably the cleanest approach is as Finn says, reinstall, giving the full path to java IN the jdk directory as you run the installer, else it will pick up either the one in the jre tree, or worse, the MS native java... So, urllib.retrieve() == a security exception because it writes a file. This means you need the java plugin, keytool, jarsigner, and policytool to get this to work. -robert |

Cool. In my testing, I am using two different servers, but during deployment, it will be the same server. Thanks for the help. (Why else would there be @sig support?) I blame Jim Hugunin for that weird feature <wink>. Ofcourse I will not remove the feature, but I don't think that I will expand on it either. Patches are always welcome, but be warning that jythonc is a unstable minefield ready to explode even at the slightest modification. regards, finn |
