We need help on the following multifactor testing, which I will explain in more detail below: - Test on different operating systems and distributions, and their versions, including especially Windows, but also Linux (RHEL, Fedora, Ubuntu) and BSD variants. To be honest, I don't know what it would be on platforms like AIX, HPUX, and Solaris; and even less so on platforms like AS/400. However, Jython does code to support all of the above, so it's worth testing if you care about a given OS. Note that S/390 remains unsupported until we get feedback from S/390 users ( http://bugs.jython.org/issue550200); but in theory this could be done in a future release, since JRuby has this support. - Different JVMs, including J9. - Internationalization, especially those using non Latin-1 characters. We have found and fixed issues in the past with Finnish, Japanese, and Turkish, but this may to extend to other languages and their corresponding locales. - Different installation logic - GUI, console, command line - supported by the installer - Choosing to install or not pip/setuptools in the installer - CPython 2.7 is and is not available; if so, it is used by the new jython.py launcher (implicitly used on Windows for jython.exe) - Using the pip (or easy_install) installed by ensurepip to install different types of tools that create executable scripts (so nose vs yolk) Some details on what was changed for RC2; it's a bit much to read I agree, but hopefully it explains the extent of what needs to be tested. RC2 includes changes for: - the installer itself - pip support, for Japanese locales, and perhaps other - setuptools, for Windows, to build executable scripts that use the older setuptools approach vs the newer distlib approach New features in the installer: - Installer installs pip, setuptools by default, but custom builds can de-select. This does not change standalone usage. (Runs jython -m ensurepip as last install step.) - Installer makes jython.py be the default launcher (as bin/jython) if CPython 2.7 is available. On some platforms like RHEL 5, where CPython 2.7 is not readily available, the old bash-based version of Jython is used. - Installer no longer supports using an alternative JRE when generating Jython launchers. Instead it just use JAVA_HOME environment variable to select the desired JRE. (Removed because of the new native launcher, jython.exe, that is now used on Windows.) The installer itself supports three different use cases, with different logic paths for determining what the user would like to have installed. All three logic paths had to modified, so these need to be tested as well: - GUI installer. This installer is selected automatically if Java can connect to a GUI environment. - Console installer. This installer is the default without a GUI environment available. The text console prompts for options to be installed. - Command line installer. No interaction with the user. Help is available about these installer options with java -jar jython-installer-2.7-rc2.jar --help - Jim On Sat, Apr 4, 2015 at 12:54 PM, fwi...@gm... < fwi...@gm...> wrote: > Please test, specially if you can test on windows! > > The releases: > > Installer: > https://oss.sonatype.org/content/repositories/orgpython-1045/org/python/jython-installer/2.7-rc2/jython-installer-2.7-rc2.jar > > Standalone: > https://oss.sonatype.org/content/repositories/orgpython-1046/org/python/jython-standalone/2.7-rc2/jython-standalone-2.7-rc2.jar > > The parent directories of each of the above have the checksums, source > jars, javadocs, etc. > > -Frank > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Dive into the World of Parallel Programming The Go Parallel Website, > sponsored > by Intel and developed in partnership with Slashdot Media, is your hub for > all > things parallel software development, from weekly thought leadership blogs > to > news, videos, case studies, tutorials and more. Re timing of the soft RC2: the last dependency is updating NEWS so that it reflects the work that has been done during the release candidate cycle. I expect to have this complete in the next few hours, then Frank can put together the release. On Thu, Apr 2, 2015 at 7:10 AM, Jim Baker <jim...@py...> wrote: > Peke, > > I'm glad you asked! Peke, I'm glad you asked! Curiously enough I did do some of this installer testing while riding a bus without any internet connectivity (left my usual hotspot at home), and it worked just fine. This is explained by the way ensurepip works: ensurepip uses bundled wheels for setuptools and pip, so no internet connectivity is used. You can also see this with the log message ensurepip emits: Ignoring indexes: https://pypi.python.org/simple/ Likewise pip can be used for other offline access, but it becomes substantially more interesting when it can access the PyPI site or a suitable mirror. That's also why it needed suitable SSL support, as provided by the socket-reboot work that took so much time last year. - Jim On Thu, Apr 2, 2015 at 6:56 AM, Pekka Klärck <pe...@ik...> wrote: > 2015-04-02 6:19 GMT+03:00 Jim Baker <jim...@py...>: > > > > In addition, the Jython installer now will install setuptools and pip by > > default (runs jython -m ensurepip) except for standalone jar (doesn't > make > > sense). These installer bugs are now fixed. We should be ready to try another soft release candidate. In addition, the Jython installer now will install setuptools and pip by default (runs jython -m ensurepip) except for standalone jar (doesn't make sense). One can also deselect this installation in the custom install. - Jim On Mon, Mar 30, 2015 at 2:03 PM, Jim Baker <jim...@py...> wrote: > We have identified the following four bugs that need to be fixed for the > next release candidate of Jython 2.7.0: > > http://bugs.jython.org/issue2297 - the installer on Windows currently > assumes that jython.bat still exists, instead of its replacement, a native > jython.exe installer. Pull requests by themselves really don't have the context we need, especially for prioritization. (Occasionally I have committed a lower priority change as we wrap up 2.7.0, but I'm trying to stay disciplined and focus only on urgent bugs at this point.) FWIW, the use of bitbucket for PRs is discouraged because it's really time consuming to get a usable diff that we can commit, just due to how hg.python.org is managed. Lastly, I personally consider myself a terrible, nonscalable select loop ;) - there's more email, pull requests on github and bitbucket, bugs, tweets, IRCs, etc, than I could ever respond to, and that's just my Jython work. Other Jython developers here are in the same situation. > I'm struggling with mercurial at the moment. > One goal of the next dev cycle (2.7.1) is to transition to https://github.com/jython - as you can see it's waiting to be filled in. Hi, I'm trying to get started with contributing to Jython, I have a few questions, 1. Which Developer Guide is considered the primary ? https://wiki.python.org/jython/JythonDeveloperGuide OR http://www.jython.org/devguide/ ? 2. I noticed that there was a github (https://github.com/jythontools/jython) mirror, Is it being actively used ? Would it be alright if I fork and sent patches as pull requests ? I'm struggling with mercurial at the moment. 3. Any recommendations of easy issues that I can try to fix ? I was thinking maybe http://bugs.jython.org/issue1376 ? Cheers, Gautam |

We have identified the following four bugs that need to be fixed for the next release candidate of Jython 2.7.0: http://bugs.jython.org/issue2297 - the installer on Windows currently assumes that jython.bat still exists, instead of its replacement, a native jython.exe installer. This problem slipped through because we were not testing the installer on Windows, assuming it was not platform dependent. I also plan to make the new Jython launcher script, src/shell/jython.py, which is wrapped as jython.exe by PyInstaller, be the default launcher on non-Windows platforms if CPython 2.7 is available, since we are going to be touching this codepath in the installer to fix this jython.bat vs jython.exe issue. Also, since the installer is touched, we should be able to add automatic installation of ensurepip. http://bugs.jython.org/issue2300 - the new Jython launcher (jython.py) currently swallows arguments. jython.py uses argparse, but the arg parsing needs more help because jython.py is then used as the launcher for tools like pip, yolk, etc. I have a fix that's almost ready to go. http://bugs.jython.org/issue2298 - setuptools currently doesn't check if the underlying platform is Windows, so it uses the wrong approach for building executable scripts. This is an easy fix, and we fixed the same issue in distlib. We are going to build our own wheel for now that we bundle as part of ensurepip, however I've been in contact with Jason Coombs, maintainer of setuptools to get this upstreamed once we have finalized our fixes. Vinay Sajip, the maintainer of distlib, is also working on an upstream fix for the changes we need. http://bugs.jython.org/issue2301 - ensurepip fails on Japanese locales, because of a problem in logging timestamps from the ensurepip module. Such timestamps are written like "日 3/29 14:55:13 2015". Naturally the last thing we want is for logging to cause failures like this! Should be an easy fix. So three fairly small bugs, plus one with straightforward changes to the installer. I hope to see a soft availability of the RC2 in the next few days. - Jim |

I accidentally included some extraneous files in the first soft launch. I've put up a new one. Since no one has found any trouble with the first try, I'll leave this up for just 24 hours and then make it the real rc1 unless something bad comes up. The releases: Installer: https://oss.sonatype.org/content/repositories/orgpython-1041/org/python/jython-installer/2.7-rc1/jython-installer-2.7-rc1.jar Standalone: https://oss.sonatype.org/content/repositories/orgpython-1042/org/python/jython-standalone/2.7-rc1/jython-standalone-2.7-rc1.jar The parent directories of each of the above have the checksums, source jars, javadocs, etc. -Frank |

Jython plans to participate in the Google Summer of Code for 2015. If you are interested, I have outlined a number of projects on our ideas page that students could work on: - Work on JyNI, which adds C extension API support to Jython - Performance optimizations, including startup time - Python bytecode compiler for Python source (must be written in Java!) See https://github.com/jythontools/gsoc2015 for the ideas page. Pull requests and comments gladly accepted to expand this list of ideas. The ideal student must be a very strong Java developer, with an existing track record of projects on such sites as GitHub and BitBucket. Knowledge of C and especially of the CPython source code invariably helps. Ideally you will also become a Jython committer as a result of your intense participation this summer. Note that the deadline for student proposals is very soon, Friday March 27. I apologize we are just getting our participation for GSOC together, but we have also been busy finalizing the Jython 2.7.0 release candidate. -- - Jim jim.baker@{colorado.edu|python.org|rackspace.com|zyasoft.com} twitter.com/jimbaker github.com/jimbaker bitbucket.com/jimbaker |

I expect this week we will have a soft release of the release candidate. I have postponed or fixed the remaining urgent bugs that require code development. Now the only remaining bug is packaging, http://bugs.jython.org/issue2282, which requires a change in the build.xml. However, if it proves to be too hard it will also get postponed, since a workaround does exist AND we are going to update packaging in a future release, namely support of Maven builds with http://bugs.jython.org/issue2182 On Tue, Mar 17, 2015 at 10:18 AM, Pradeep Badiger <Pra...@fi...> wrote: > Hi, > > > > When can we expect a production ready build for Jython 2.7? > > > > Thanks, > > Pradeep V.B. > > > > This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential, proprietary > and intended solely for the individual or entity to whom they are > addressed.
