Just want to remind everyone that we are still on target for beta 1 next week on Thurs Sept 10. Thanks Jeff for fixing circular imports! There are a bunch of things I personally planned to do -- on sockets in particular -- that slipped. Busy on other things besides Jython dev. But I believe I can get most of the outstanding socket bugs plus installer changes done by beta 2. G'day Ivan, I have done similar (but no longer have access to the code in question) and used a combination of keeping track of the PySystemState associated with a particular script and an import hook that kept track of file modification times so that if the script changed it could be reloaded. Hello,
We develop an open source project, using Jython as a script
interpretation tool. Our application uses a pool of PythonInterpreter
objects to facilitate multi-user work in web application.
After upgrading to Jython version 2.7 we faced the following critical
problem. In version 2.5, in order to create new PythonInterpreter each
time we needed one more we used the following:
new PythonInterpreter(null, new PySystemState())
Due to changes in version 2.7 we had to change to
new PythonInterpreter(null, Py.getSystemState())
as previous method failed to work properly (random packages were
reported as missing).
Now the problem is that each time we change a Jython script file it is
not enough to clear a pool of PythonInterpreters anymore to get things
work the new way. We need to restart the whole Java application because
PySystemState returned by Py.getSystemState() apparently caches the
previous version of compiled byte code. Restarting the application takes
up to several minutes, but we have to change the scripts 'on the fly'.
If we had a proper method of resetting PySystemState it would have
solved our problem. But we don't have one, e. g. see an open issue

It's time for us to plan the Jython 2.7.1 release schedule. I'm going to suggest the following dates: - Beta 1 on Thur Sept 10 - Beta 2 on Thur Oct 8 - Release Candidate on Thur Nov 5 - *Final release on Thur Nov 19* These dates may slip a few days. However, bugs that are not completed in time for the release will slip to 2.7.2 (or later), with the 2.7.2 release scheduled for May 2016, in time for PyCon. The process of releasing betas and the release candidate provides two important benefits: - Jython users can evaluate and test Jython without building from source - Jython developers can triage the most important bugs, per the state of the development cycle For example, perhaps the most important bugs for us to fix in 2.7.1 are those necessary to make Jython installation more robust; see http://bugs.jython.org/issue2345, http://bugs.jython.org/issue2346, http://bugs.jython.org/issue2350. While this installer work is straightforward, let's face it, it's not exactly what I would most prefer to work on ;) The betas help ensure we do get it fixed, especially now that we have a number of installation failure scenarios to consider that we didn't conceive of in our earlier testing for 2.7.0. 2.7.1 development has continued on a nice pace. It's of course slower than the wrapup of 2.7.0, but that simply was not sustainable with the resources we have. However, it seems also to be perfectly fine - all reports and certainly my own usage is that 2.7.0 has been a very robust release once installed. (My own focus with Jython has recently been in using Jython, and developing tooling for Jython, such as WSGI support by Fireside, https://github.com/jythontools/fireside) I would like to highlight two important sets of changes that have landed in trunk and will be included in the 2.7.1 release: - Jeff Allen fixed a number of import bugs, such as relative imports generating incorrect bytecode. - Stefan Richthofer, as part of his GSOC project on JyNI, has significantly enhanced Jython's gc to work with CPython-style refcounting/native allocations, as need for code using the C Extension API provided by JyNI. - Jim |

Okay, sorry for bothering you. I already found out the reason for all this. When handing a number to a Java-style weakref (or any other non-Jython-aware Java method), Jython implicitly converts it to a Java-Float or Integer object, while tuples and lists are kept PyTuple or PyList. So the Java-style weakref actually points to a distinct object than the Jython-style one. The reason for strings beeing "overpersistent" regarding Java-weakrefs is internation I suppose. Jython hands the interned string to the weakref, but the interned string is immortal anyway, so the weakref is never cleared. Regards Stefan > Gesendet: Sonntag, 19. I didn't do the `%` interpolation yet as it is very complicated, and so far
not very important as there shouldn't be much any code using it yet, so it
is not very important for testing in early phases. Unfortunately the
formatting language differs from thestr language. And there still is no
`.format` and afaik will not be:

Welcome to the project. I'd be happy to take a look. But I'm replying before I have. BaseBytes was written with the idea that a PyBytes would eventually descend from it. I probably made some mistakes in doing that, but you should have found basically everything in place. A large missing piece is string interpolation (% and format): CPython added that to 'bytes' (and 'bytearray'?) just recently. I recommend that be adapted from Jython 2 PyString. I have little doubt we should stay aligned with the CPython implementation names for 'str' and 'int'. The backward-compatibility arguments apply to us almost as strongly. Think about how the code looks when half the PyString references are intentional and half are historic (meant something else when written). And we get a long way just porting the CPython code to Java: a different name would make that harder I think.
