Hello Jython Dev Team, Per https://www.jython.org/jython-old-sites/archive/221/archive/22/userguide.html#overloaded-java-method-signatures: *"Java methods are allowed to be overloaded for different signatures (types and number of arguments). When different versions of the method differ in the number of arguments that they expect, the appropriate method can be easily determined from the number of arguments passed to the method."* With Jyhon 2.7 (2.7.1, and the current RC of 2.7.2 as well), this works fine for regular class methods, eg: class A { void f(int a) { return a + 1; } void f(int a, int b) { return a+b; } } in Jython: A().f(4) # will select the proper overload A().f(1, 2) # will select the proper overload However, for interfaces: interface I { default void f(int a) { return f(a, 1); } void f(int a, int b); } class A implements I { void f(int a, int b) { return a+b; } } in Jython: x = someMethodReturningAnObjectImplementingI() x.f(4) # fail, complains that method should receive 2 args So it looks like default methods, a language addition of Java 8, may not be seen by the Jython interpreter. Is that the case, or am I doing something wrong? In the former case, any chance to support that in a coming release? Thank you & Best regards, -- Nicolas Falliere (ni...@pn...) It's beginning to look like we might be ready for a release candidate. Does anyone object? Have I missed a treasured patch? Not much has changed from b3. Only the fix to https://bugs.jython.org/issue2862 seems remotely risky. The package cache relocates to the current working directory. I've opted to fix it in the way I thought least likely to break anything. (It always seemed to me an odd choice that a cache should be shared system wide. A search leads only to people seeking help to work around this odd choice.) Bit busy this week, so probably this will be late in the week, and appear over next weekend. Jeff -- Jeff Allen |

Hi Alan, *Per the JDK 14 schedule [1] , we are now in the Release Candidate Phase * The stabilization repository, jdk/jdk14, *is open for P1 bug fixes * per the JDK Release Process (JEP 3) [2]. In fact the problem is not shading but signimng: the fact that we bundle Bouncy Castle at all makes it stop working in certain respects. The socket-reboot branch, bringing back the memories! Adam is absolutely right about the use of shading. Although in our defense, when we started using jarjarbinks, it was the best available choice out there to manage these dependencies. The world has moved on, and the recent Gradle work will hopefully be a good bridge to that. re these shaded module imports: I think the only thing here that might have been introduced in this branch is working around the shading of included libraries (netty, etc) from Python library code (socket, ssl, select). There is certainly no attempt to be systematic about fixing other dependencies like JNR, which can still see dependency hell if JRuby is also installed. In other codebases I have seen this done reactively as a “poor man’s dependency conflict resolution”. ie introduce renaming only where there are conflicts in transitive dependencies, allowing the use of two different versions of classes with the same full name. I don’t know the specific history in Jython, though. When we install Jython we have bundled the contents of the JARs we
depend on into ~/jython.jar . Some we name-translate:
org/python/apache/commons/compress
org/python/bouncycastle
And some we just copy:
com/ziclix/python/sql
jnr/ffi
What drives one choice or the other?
Testing after installation, I get a test failure from test_ssl (Unable
to create OpenSSL PBDKF: PBKDF-OpenSSL SecretKeyFactory not available),
where I suspect the shading is the cause. Quite likely, something is
loaded by its unshaded class name, since if I place unshaded BC JARs on
the path the test passes.
We seem to have gone to some lengths in _sslcerts.py, for example, to
use the shaded classes, but must we shade it?

Today I am building Jython 2.7.2b3 for release, hoping it will be the last beta in its version, but we'll see. b2 flushed out some new defects, including the need to revisit the threading bug in type publication. After this, Jython will begin to identify as v2.7.2b4-DEV. This moving on to the next version immediately seems to work, where the suffix means "in development", i.e. not yet. When we decide it's actually a release candidate, it is easy to change to v2.7.2rc1-DEV. I have worked off the bugs tagged milestone 2.7.2, pulled a couple of GitHub PRs from Adam, and at least looked at other PRs there. (There's a simple PR I think acceptable but needs a CLA.) Anything else I'm missing? _socket.py really needs some love, but it would be for 2.7.3. Jeff -- Jeff Allen |

Does anyone have thoughts about https://bugs.jython.org/issue2834? Investigating, I found that when each interpreter has its own class loader, but they ask for the same-named class, the action of our Java package cache is to give every interpreter the exactly same type object, wrapping the Java class object that the first interpreter loaded. So you will get yours through someone else's loader. This is a helpful issue as it has partially clarified something I have been uneasy about for some time (the relationship of interpreters, threads and packages). I see interesting parallels in recent discussion on python-dev, on thread state in relation to sub-interpreters (https://mail.python.org/archives/list/pyt...@py.../thread/PIXJAJPWKDGHSQD65VOO2B7FDLU2QLHH/). We have Java class loaders in the mix, but I think that might actually help us to a correct answer (in Jython 3). The cache ought to distinguish loaders (or interpreters), so classes different to the JVM are different types to Python. (Or can someone explain otherwise?) And it needs synchronisation. Correcting this, digging into JavaPackageManager and import is, in my view, risky enough to merit a third beta. I just wish I could be sure I've found what's behind issue 2834 as reported, not something else. We haven't had the OP's view. A mistaken analysis here could lead to a beta 4, and I'd really like to terminate this loop. Jeff -- Jeff Allen |
