It's the goal of the Classpath and GCJ etc project to be fully compatible with the Java platform, so *in theory* if we did nothing, in time, this goal should be automatically achieved. However in practice the free platform lags the latest Sun releases so in order to make this happen faster one practical step that can be taken is not to dive into the latest greatest versions of Java being released from Sun. Eg if we stick with the 1.4 API and source code standard I think this will help achieve that goal faster. Is this something we want to do? Or are there compelling features in 1.5 and the soon to be released 1.6 (or it 6, or 6000++turbo or whatever the Sun marketing people will call it ;). Joe.
