Good-day Everyone: Sorry for posting something slightly off-topic; I'll keep this short. I have been authorized by the University of Victoria's Research Ethics committee to begin a study pertaining to how organizations use and apply data synchronization services for semi-connected, mobile computing devices. In particular, this study is trying to ascertain the patterns and best practices used by individuals within such organizations pertaining to data synchronization of handheld devices. The currently approved survey consists of only seven questions, and should take the average respondent no more than five minutes to complete. The survey is completely anonymous, and neither asks nor stores any identifying information whatsoever. The output of this research will be used to create accurate user models for use in a Masters project entitled "Optimizing Synchronization Cost for Mobile Devices: The Expedient Trickle Sync Algorithm". Please note that this research is not currently interested in individual users synchronizing only personal, PIM-style data, but in organizations which have deployed handheld devices for business applications. If you are interested in participating in this survey, please send an e-mail to "yaz...@cs..." expressing your interest. Brad BARCLAY M.Sc. Good-day Everybody: Are you a jSyncManager user? Would you like your jSyncManager-in-action screenshot online for the world to see? I'm soliciting screenshots from users of all operating systems for the "Screenshots" section of our SourceForge Project Page. Full-screen shots which include the jSyncManager in use (manipulating transports, jConduits, or preferences, synchronizing, etc.) are what we're looking for, along with a brief list of what operating system, graphical environment, and Java Runtime you're using. Your screenshots could be featured on our project page, and will help us to promote the jSyncManager! If you have one or more screenshots you'd like to submit, e-mail them to scr...@js.... I look forward to seeing your submissions! Hey Everyone: This notice is to let you know that the jSyncManager v3.2 alpha 02 has been released. New items in this release include: - the ConduitHandler and JHotSync classes now provide support for accessing the Expansion Manager and VFS data, making access to data and files on expansion cards possible. - vCard support has been updated - the MultiPort Server now supports TCP sync connections - New jConduit: NetInstaller, which allows for the installation of PRC and PDB files from over a network through a URL. - Protocol stack support for CMP Extended packets (necessary to eventually support "Network HotSync" compatibility) - Re-arranged the location of some of the data conversion utility classes from API.Protocol.Util to API.Conduit.Tools - Modification to the way we do type conversions to enhance performance - Added a work-around for restoring the Graffiti Shortcuts database. - Lots of other fixes and performance enhancements. Also new with this release are with the jSyncManager Bundles, which see the following changes: - There is now a platform-neutral bundle, which includes all of the pre-requisites for the jSyncManager other than the transport APIs (which are platform specific). This bundle is now runnable as-is; just unzip and run "java -jar jsyncmanager.jar". You no longer have to copy any files to your Standard Extensions directory, or to edit your CLASSPATH. - The Mac OS X bundle now includes all available pre-requisites. (There is no Java USB API for Mac OS X at this time, and thus this isn't included. But we're working on it). - New bundles will be coming soon! As usual, questions or comments may be directed to this mailing list, or sent to me at in...@js.... Welcome back. The forums have been quiet. For some reason my most recent build from source will not do a backup sync. I'm not yet sure if Netbeans messed up the build or if it's a serialization error or what. The wierd part is the Palm claims the sync completed, but none of the data files in the jSyncManager user directory get updated. I'm probably not going to have any time to track down exactly what failed until the weekend. Hey Everyone: I'm working off very little sleep at the moment, so I'm going to keep this short :). The jSyncManager v3.0 API and Core Application Set has gone gold! The v3.0 FINAL releases are now available for download through SourceForge, at: http://files.jsyncmanager.org A full press release will be made available later today. Everyone join me in a hearty cheer and congratulations to the jSyncManager Core Development team for all their hard work these last 12 months in getting the code ready for this release! Hey Everyone: Just a heads-up that the jSyncManager v3.0 final is going to be made available online for download this Monday, October 20th, through http://www.jsyncmanager.org (or, if you prefer to go through our SourceForge project page, http://sf.jsyncmanager.org). Big benifit of the "final" release over gamma 02 -- the binaries for this one will be fully optimized by the compiler :). I expect we'll be having a chat Monday night at 2100 (EST -- that's 0200UTC) on our IRC channel at irc://irc.jsyncmanager.org/jsyncmanager (if you have Mozilla or IBM Web Browser installed, just click on the URL, or copy and paste it to your browsers location bar and press enter to join the chat). Please feel free to join myself and some of the other developers to celebrate this release. Hey Everyone: Just FYI, the jSyncManager v3.0 API and CAS gammas 02 are now available online for download. This release fixes a minor discrepency between the jConduit Development Documentation and the CAS Gamma 01 implementation, which caused a NullPointerException if a jConduit attempted to return null for it's configuration JPanel. Please be sure to download and test this release, reporting any and all problems to "su...@js...". We expect this to be the last of the v3.0 gamma releases -- v3.0 final should be out sometime early next week. As always, if anyone has any questions or comments, please feel free to let me know. >From Brad (Unable to send email for some reason!): ************************************************** Hello Everyone: This is an announcement to let you know that the jSyncManager Core Application Set (CAS) beta 01 is now available online for download. This release is the first feature-complete release of the core jSyncManager applications. I encourage everyone to download and test this release heavily, and to let us know if you run into any major (or minor) bugs or other issues with this code. This release includes a number of additions and fixes, including our new JavaHelp subsystem (with context-sensitive help now available for several panels), the new username query dialogue (for users of new handheld devices, or those whom have undergone a hard reset), new GUI dialogs for the Default jConduit, fixes to the protocol stack, and some major fixes to our PRC/PDB output subsystem that caused problems in previous releases. Stability, reliability, and performance have all been improved significantly. An official press release will be posted to the usual sources tomorrow. This release is extremely important to the future of our project, so please be sure to spread the word to your friends and colleagues, download a copy, read the included ReadMe file, run some tests, and let us know if you run into any difficulties or problems. This email list (both the -devel and -open lists) are for discussions of the current product, new enhancement ideas, and overall discussion of jSyncManager. While we welcome defect reportsand enhancement requests, and will work our hardest to ensure that bugs are squashed, enhancements are designed and added, we need to be able to find the defect/enhancement reports, and while this forum may be handy for some things, these are not some of them. To ensure that we keep on track with all defects and enhancements, please use the appropriate pages listed below for the project on SourceForge. This will ensure that 1) the people in the know get the information they need, or can find it easily, and 2) others can look at these pages to see if a specific issue has been addressed already. So please, use the links below if/when you find an issue and want to request an enhancement of any sort. The pages are somewhat self-explanatory, but if you have questions about them, feel free to ask here, or ask sourceforge support.
