I say this because the eCS site mirrors what's currently available via SWC and they still have the broken version posted, along with a copy of the older v1.3.0 version which works. > AFAIK, IBM hasn't granted a redistribution right to this API set. AFAIK, this is true and will continue to be. While we can't have download links, we could still have links pointing OS/2 users at the SWC and eCS sites. One would think that OS/2 users should already know that these are the links to use, but end-users never fail to continue to surprise me. Ask me privately about the one that occurred on July 3rd, if you are interested. PRESS RELEASE jSyncManager.org announces first alpha release of the jSyncManager 3.0 Palm Hand-held Synchronization Core Application Set for Java, and the second beta release of the jSyncManager 3.0 API for Java. TORONTO, CANADA, June 9th, 2003 - The jSyncManager.org development team is pleased to announce the first alpha release of the jSyncManager v3.0 Core Application Set. This suite of applications, written for Sun Microsystem's Java Runtime Environment, allowing users to perform data synchronization tasks for PalmOS based hand-helds on a variety of computing platforms. "We feel that the jSyncManager v3.0 Core Application Set is the sort of software corporations looking to manage hand held data within a heterogeneous environment have been looking for", said Brad Barclay, lead developer and project administrator for the jSyncManager.org Project. "It's easy to configure, stable, and highly scaleable. It will run on front office Windows-based systems to synchronize a single hand held, and on the back-office UNIX or OS/2 based systems synchronizing potentially hundreds of hand held systems simultaneously". The jSyncManager v3.0 Core Application Set comprises two core applications: a graphical end-user application, and the MultiPort Server, which can be set-up to handle the synchronization of multiple hand-helds simultaneously. Also announced today was the second beta release for the jSyncManager v3.0 API, which allows developers to create plug-ins for the Core Application Set, and to give them the ability to create their own synchronization applications based on the jSyncManager engine. "We got some good feedback on our first beta release from developers looking at what our code can do. That, along with our own internal testing uncovered some issues that we have been able to resolve", said Mr. Barclay. The jSyncManager v3.0 Core Application Set is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). The jSyncManager v3.0 API is licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL). Both are available, along with full source code, for immediate download through the jSyncManager web site. About jSyncManager.org jSyncManager.org is an Open Source project lead by Brad Barclay and supported by globally dispersed contributors. Since its inception in 1997, The jSyncManager.org Project has sought to bring high-quality, cross platform data synchronization solutions to individual and enterprise users. Since 2002, the project has been available as Open Source, and has received contributions and support from dozens of individuals and major corporations. Hey Everyone: Just FYI, the jSyncManager v3.0 Core Application Set (aka CAS -- which includes the GUI end user program) alpha 01 has been released on our SourceForge Project website at: http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/jsyncmanager As well, we've released the jSyncManager v3.0 API beta 02, fixing a serious bug with the DLPRecord class. The CAS includes the API beta 02 files (so it doesn't have this bug, and if you only want to use the jSyncManager program, you don't need to download the API beta 02 JAR). Official press releases will be made available tomorrow, but this is your chance to get the jump on everyone else and download this new release first. As always, questions or comments may be directed to this list, or e-mailed to me directly. Attention News Editors: jSyncManager.org announces first beta release of the jSyncManager 3.0 Palm Hand-held Synchronization API for Java TORONTO, 15 May 2003 - The jSyncManager.org development team announced today the release of the first beta of their jSyncManager Application Programming Interface v3.0. The API set, written for Sun Microsystem's Java runtime environment, allows developers to create applications that can leverage data on PalmOS based hand-held devices on a variety of computing platforms. "One of the great things about the jSyncManager API is that it allows synchronization and data management applications for PalmOS-based hand-held devices to be run virtually anywhere", said Brad Barclay, lead developer and project administrator for the jSyncManager.org Project. "The same synchronization applications and logic can be run on Windows, UNIX, OS/2, Linux, and MacOS operating systems. Anywhere Java can be run, the jSyncManager API can be used". The jSyncManager API includes a full PalmOS-compatible protocol stack, data synchronization engine, and a plug-in architecture allowing the engine to be dynamically bound to other applications and databases, called jConduits. The jSyncManager is licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License, allowing individuals and organizations to use, modify, and redistribute the library with their own applications and tools free of charge. "We feel the LGPL gives potential users of our library a wider range of choices as to how they use that library than with traditional, closed-source licenses", said Barclay. "We've already had a number of companies approach us interested in using our library in their own applications to provide robust, stable hand-held synchronization facilities to their users". Since its inception in 1997, The jSyncManager.org Project has sought to bring high-quality, cross platform data synchronization solutions to individual and enterprise users. Since 2002, the project has been available as Open Source, and has received contributions and support from dozens of individuals and major corporations. Hey Everyone: Just FYI, the jSyncManager API beta 01 is now available for download form the jSyncManager SourceForge site, at: http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/jsyncmanager The API set, licensed under the LGPL license, incorporates all of the jSyncManagers synchronization engine, protocol stack, jConduit and transport plug-in architectures, and PalmOS data abstraction objects so developers may create their own synchronization applications, jConduit and transport plug-ins, and other code utilizing the jSyncManager engine. An official press release is forthcoming, and will be posted here when it's available. We encourage everyone interested in working with the jSyncManager codebase to download and test this beta release, and let us know if you encounter any bugs, errors, or other problems. A gamma release of this code is tentitively slated for late June. If anyone has any questions or comments, please feel free to post them to this list, or to e-mail me directly. Hey Everyone: Just FYI, the licensing for some of the jSyncManager classes has been changed today from GPL to LGPL. Specifically, all of the sources in the "org.jSyncManager.API" and "org.jSyncManager.Transport" packages (and their sub-packages) are now LGPL licensed. All other classes continue to use the GPL license. This move has been made to enable more closed-source developers to make use of the jSyncManager APIs. In particular, this will allow developers to create closed-source jConduits if they so desire. It is our hope that this move will encourage the development of more jSyncManager-enabled applications, while retaining the Open Source integrity of the jSyncManager itself. If anyone has any questions or comments, please feel free to let me know. Hi Everyone: This is just a short note to inform you that I've released todays nightly build of the jSyncManager, featuring the new USB sync support, to SourceForge. Those interested in downloading this new release should visit: http://sourceforge.net/projects/jsyncmanager Please be sure to read the release notes for the release, as there have been some changes from the previous releases. There is also an important issue that Linux users should be aware of if they wish to use the new USB synchronization mechanism. Note that USB sync support requires that you install the jUSB API for your platform onto your system. This is available through http://jusb.sourceforge.net. It is available for Linux, Windows, and MacOS at this time. Note as well that we're considering this a pre-beta release. There is still much work to be done before the next official release (currently scheduled for March 2003), however we felt that this release works sufficiently well as-is that we'd make it available to the public so they could test and use the new USB support. This also opens up the project to users and developers who, not having a serial dock or serial IR port, were unable to use its data synchronization capabilities. If anyone has any questions about this pre-release, please feel free to post them to our help forum on SourceForge, via the above listed URL. Hi Everyone: This is the first of what I hope are many messages to the open jSyncManager forum. This forum includes both jSyncManager developers and users alike, so if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to post them here. I'm happy to announce that the jSyncManager Core Development Team has, as of last night, got USB HotSync working using the jUSB API (http://jusb.sourceforge.net). Those users on platforms currently supported by the jUSB API can now synchronize their PalmOS based devices via USB docking stations with the jSyncManager, just as they do with serial docking stations. Best of all, USB HotSync is, in our testing, nearly 3 times faster than Serial HotSync running at 115 200 bps! This will be a preliminary release in order to get a wide variety of users the chance to work with the jSyncManager. It will include the new packaging structure we implemented a few weeks ago, along with the new jConduit API and Transport APIs. Existing third-party jConduits won't work with this new release, however we'll be working with many of them in order to rectify this situation. Missing in this pre-release will be the new Swing-based GUI (which is still being designed), and a number of other new items we're working on for the next official release (slated for March 2003). I'll post another message here when the code is online, so you can download it and experiment with it.
