But the same problem applies (pointed out to me by Christian Plattner author of Ganymed). JRuby has solved this problem by using JNA to implement domain sockets. And the junixsocket uses JNI and its binary jars come with compiled libraries for Linux 32/64, Mac 32/64. Getting this more complete to support more platforms shouldn't be too difficult.
