I've read somewhere that this is due to Apple forgetting to replace an expired certificate. Can you try downloading again?

It is due to the "new" security features on Mac OS.
On Settings -> Security -> Allow Apps -> No Restrictions ( The text may vary because i translated it from german.)
P.S. This works on 10.10.5, but i presume it will work on 10.11 too

Maybe the app does not have a valid apple security certificate? Would be great to be able to reactivate the secuity feature to "verified developers".

No, the app does not have a certificate.
And it won't get one from me, because I won't pay apple for developing a free open source app for Mac Users.
If someone else wants to package the app and sign it, I'll be glad to upload it.

OS X Gatekeeper shows this message because the application bundle is not digitally signed. To run the application for the first time, you will need to disable Gatekeeper as follows:

Go to System Preferences... | Security & Privacy | General tab.

Click the Lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your password to make changes.

Select Allow apps downloaded from: Anywhere.

You can enable Gatekeeper again after the first successful launch of the application
