Also, along similar lines to both this and gchii's related "know your competition message," a more-or-less complete set of JavaOS (yes, *that* Sun/IBM JavaOS) documentation is available via the web. It includes a device driver writer's guide, a system administrator's guide, etc. It must be well over a thousand pages. (PDF format, fyi.) There is also a book available at Amazon (my copy is unfortunately at home and I am at work) on the OS, although it seemed pretty skimpy to me (I think it's less than about 150 pages). A long time ago, I suggested chasing JavaOS' tail-lights as a way to finesse away all these design discussions. In just the same way the Linus cloned the UNIX kernal API, I suggested we clone the JavaOS APIs. The effort would have parallelized better, and we would have cloned a debugged (if arguably somewhat over-elaborate, but, hey, that's just my opinion) design, and we certainly would've argued less (with the exception of underspecified parts of the design). I don't think this suggestion went over too well. However, maybe now is a good time to revisit this issue. -jm -- ==== John Morrison ==== MAK Technologies Inc. ==== 185 Alewife Brook Parkway, Cambridge, MA 02138 ==== http://www.mak.com/ ==== vox:617-876-8085 x115 ==== fax:617-876-9208 ==== jm...@ma... |
