Hello. Firstly I feel a bit mean making any criticism of this excellent software that you have made available free and which is enabling me to read fantastic comics that I could otherwise not afford to read. That said, my admiration and the inclusion in your software to suggest any improvement has encouraged me to get in contact.

My first question regards navigation. I am using Jomic on a Macbook and find that to use the arrow keys (on my keyboard) to navigate the pages requires me to press the function key and the arrow keys - is there any way that it could be made so that i don't need to press the function key or is this a limitation of macs? Using Preview I would just hit the arrow keys so I'm guessing it may be possible to do the same with Jomic which would, in my opinion, be an improvement.

My second suggestion regards the look of the interface. I work as an illustrator, cartoonist, and graphics man for a small production company so feel I have some qualification for criticising the icons for navigation etc in Jomic. They work fine and are rendered very smoothly but in my opinion they are a bit flashy for the applications' purpose. I would like to suggest the use of more simplistic icons then those used. I can well understand that this is just a matter of my opinion but the bevelled and gel like icons used seem out of keeping with the pen and ink work of most comics that would be viewed in jomic. If you are willing to entertain the idea of changing them - or better still offering a choice of interface skin so that people can make their own mind I would be happy to have a go at trying to offer alternative images for you.

I do hope this has not got on your nerves and let me thank you once again for your fantastic efforts in creating this software.

All the best,

John Rowley

I've just had a look through a few of the other suggestions and it seems that Roskakori is the main man around here so i changed the 'assigned to nobody' to 'roskakori'. 'assigned to nobody' seemed so pointless.

Roskakori, if you are reading this I hope you don't mind my assignment. atb John

Hey, finally someone who feels the same about the icons!

Yes, they are way too shiny. That's because I took them from a free icon set popular from Linux. I just picked whatever fit the least bad. For some functions I could not find any icons at all, so they are not available from the toolbar (the various zoom modes for instance).

If you want to submit an alternative set just go ahead. I'm all for minimalistic icons too.

The current images are available from <http://jomic.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/jomic/trunk/jomic/source/net/sf/jomic/images/>.

If you design new ones, I suggest you use the same names as the existing ones. This makes it easy to integrate them without renaming or changing the program code.

    hello again,

thanks for responding to my comment. I will have a go at making some alternative icons. I'm guessing i'll submit them, you suggest some changes/improvements or reject outright - hopefully not reject outright but i will respect your decision whatever.

I like them. Simple and easy to recognize, no messy colors. It pretty much what I envisoned myself but never came across to do because of my none-existent icon drawing skills.

But which function do you propose to assign to the bug icon?

Anyway, I'd be glad to change the icons if you deliver a whole set using a similar style.

Ah, that's a nice surprise. i'm very pleased they are what you would have made - that is the best.

the bug icon is a bit unnecessary - 'report a bug'. i made icons for almost everthing but began to think that actually some menu items should have no icons because the icon bar will look better with less.

i have thought the icons are perhaps a little dark but it does help them to be seen when small. do you think i should tone it down to a dark grey? is it possible or worth giving them a rollover state? perhaps not.

also, these being the first icons i ever made, what file format do you need? these were all made in illustrator and then imported into photoshop. also, if you have naming conventions for each icon perhaps you should supply me with them so that your code references don't need to change.

i just logged in here to see if there was any activity. and i realised you had given me a link to suss out the existing icon names. i hadnt realised this - that's why i didnt name them right or make them gifs. do you want me to do this?
