A quick profile shows that prgetc is heavily involved here. That function has been reported in [#255]. I checked in the patch posted there (by me) to the windows branch (well, a couple commits: [08f156], [8a01dc]). It's not 15-minutes slow, but still not exactly fast either.
I've confirmed that this issue still exists in 4.0.

With this, 4K takes just a few seconds but 1M still takes a long time. Maybe between this and the prgetc fix will be enough.
