When I try to connect to the demo repository following the instructions on the Quickstart doc @ http://www.jlibrary.org/repositories/jLibrary/First%20Steps/QuickStart.html I get a "java.lang.Exception: java.io.StreamCorruptedException: invalid stream header: 3C21444F" and I can't connect.

That is right, the page is incorrect and you must use http://www.jlibrary.org instead of http://demo.jlibrary.org
