I appreciate that learning something new like this can be intimidating (particularly when you're still a student), but the J/Flex manual has step-by-step instructions for getting it running, and building a simple lexer. It includes very clear examples, as well as the full set of options. The options may be intimidating, but the odds are good that you won't have to use most of them - if you ever do, then it will only be because you understand the system well enough to know that you need them. Not many projects make it this easy. (I'm writing this as a user of J/Flex, not as an author). If you do get stuck, then come back with some specific questions, and I'm sure you'll find someone who is willing to help out.
