I have join forces with http://tikiwiki.org/ to create a spreadsheet applet.

The main applications people need:
Email & address book
Word Processor
Spreadsheet
Graphic editor
Other productivity apps (Calendar, note, todo, etc)

Tiki handles all of these (at least to an acceptable level) except for the spreadsheet.

After awhile of closing down the project. It is up and running again. There is a new version of the spreadsheet application demo that uses a custom swing component for the spreadsheet instead of extending JTable. There is also code for masked input fields and I've extended the scope of the project to also create libraries for developers (licensed under LGPL).
