Hello, I'm using jedit-syntax-2.2.2 and would like to know whether there is a way of highlighting a block of text. I have tried changing SyntaxDocument to extend DefaultStyledDocument so I could make use of the setCharacterAttributes method but this didn't work. Thanks, Ian Tipton. |

The component is self contained and designed to be used as-is. The existing JEditTextArea is from an old version of JEdit and only moderately stable. The author of JEdit is supposed to be releasing a new stand alone text component soon so I imagine as soon as he does that, this project will be completely useless. Hello, is it possible to use a JTextPane instead of the JEditTextArea ? I've written a small XML-Editor and the only thing I need is the Syntax-Highlighting. (My Syntax-Highlighting-Functions are to slow and have a few bugs). For my Application it would be better to use a JTextPane. Greetings, Volker Zaich |

Hi, I'm writing an editor for jess, a language for expert system. Text and symbol coloring work well, but i have to color the sequence => and <- I try to write this code: [...] case '=' : if (length - i > 1) { if (array[i1] == '>') { addToken(i - lastOffset, Token.NULL); addToken(2, Token.LABEL); addToken(length-(i+2),Token.NULL); lastOffset = lastKeyword = length; break loop; } } break; [...] but if I insert a line like: (pippo pluto) => (assert minni) all the text after the => isn't colored... If I change "break loop" with "break" and I try to modify the line an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException is throw... Please help me! |

The syntax package in the CVS can now be used outside of jEdit. Note that it is still GPL'd. Maybe someone wants to hack the syntax.jedit.org text area to use the new syntax code? The API is not much different. I am planning on making the text area independent too, at a later stage. -- Slava Pestov |

Starting from j2sdk 1.4 Sun added the X primary clipboard support to swin= g components: that is a really cool feature on X-Windows (Unix) environmen= t where you can select a text somewhere (in a terminal, browser, etc) and paste it in anoter text object simply by pressing the middle mouse button= . I added that feature to jedit-syntax (2.2.2). Furthermore, I used a workaround proposed by Henning Oliver in order to be able to use multiple different JEditText areas in the same applicatio= ns. If someone is interested on this just replay to this message, I will drop= a URL where to download it. Thanks for maintaing such a nice package! Enrico |

> + Mouse-wheel support (it's easy since 1.4, but what about 1.3?) For whatever it's worth, I wouldn't worry about mousewheel support wi= th=20 < 1.4. PC, Linux, and Mac (OS X) all officially support 1.4 (with OS= X,=20 it will soon), and if you want pretty in-depth stuff like=20 code-completion, you might be better off putting time there. I belie= ve=20 there are already hacks for Windows & Linux out there that people cou= ld=20 use to quickly extend the jEdit pkg. Another for whatever it's worth, if you add everything on this list,= =20 you're getting really close to duplicating another project, the Netbe= ans=20 Editor Module (http://editor.netbeans.org/). The Editor is meant to = be=20 a lightweight module that can be easily extended outside of the Netbe= ans=20 IDE framework. You might use that information (that there's a project that comes clo= se=20 to some of this) to keep the jEdit package a bit simpler, borrow some= NB=20 Editor code for complicated tasks (SPL'd, so you should be able to ro= ll=20 it in), try to combine parts of the projects, or just to say, "Thanks= ,=20 Ruffin, but I already knew about that 'competition'!" :^) not quite 2=A2... Hi, here is an updated to-do. Feel free to implement (preferred ;-) or make suggestions. Let me know if you work on some item. Greetings, Oliver ============================== ToDo jEdit Syntax Highlighting ============================== Last update: 04.12.2002 Non-critical changes and bugfixes will go into the 2.2.x branch whereas major changes (which could cause stability/reliability problems due to core changes) will go into the 2.3.x branch which I will open as soon as I get the necessary contributions. I am the maintainer, not merely the sole developer. So do not expect me to act like Santa Claus. I am happy to test and integrate contributions, though. If you suggest or offer a new feature, please keep in mind that it should not require JDK 1.4 or higher. I think it's reasonable to assume JDK 1.3 (for now). Necessary / Important ===================== + Undo (with keybinding) + Word wrap + Switch to file based token lists + Switch to file-based settings (colors, keybindings, etc.) + Dialog for settings + Push/Pop bookmark + Block indentation of selected text with [TAB] key + Drag&Drop support + Code quality - Enforce naming conventions (e.g. .eolMarkers -> .showEOLMarkers) - Verify visibility of class members (e.g. internal methods should not be public) - Self-/Stress-/Regressiontests Nice-To-Have ============ + Code completion + Parameter info + More tokenmarkers + Format-only edit mode - insert/delete whitespace (spaces, tabs, carriage returns, etc.) - delete/edit/insert comments + Advanced bookmarking + Mouse-wheel support (it's easy since 1.4, but what about 1.3?) + Textfolding This e-mail and any attachment is for authorised use by the intended recipient(s) only. This would also allow visible bookmarks, breakpoint and other stuff like a row indicator for text that is being processed line by line (e.g. SQL commands in an SQL console). What do you think? Hey Folks, I downloaded the project recently and have been integrating it into a text editor project I've been working on. My commendations! The software is excellent. I have a question and a request. Question: I notice that you cannot load two instances of JEditTextArea independently without both loading the same text. I've been looking for some static variable that might be the cause of the problem but have been so far unsuccessful. Any pointers would be much appreciated. Request: Could "Peter Mattsson" please repost or send me his line numbers implementation. My OS doesn't have the diff tool required and I think the web archive version chopped some of it off. If nobody replies I'll delve deeper myself and post the fix. Thanks folks! |

Hi, here is an updated to-do. Feel free to implement (preferred ;-) or make suggestions. Greetings, Oliver ============================== ToDo jEdit Syntax Highlighting ============================== Last update: 20.08.2002 Non-critical changes and bugfixes will go into the 2.2.x branch whereas major changes (which could cause stability/reliability problems due to core changes) will go into the 2.3.x branch which I will open as soon as I get the necessary contributions. I am the maintainer, not merely the sole developer. If you suggest or offer a new feature, please keep in mind that it should not require JDK 1.4 or higher. I think it's reasonable to assume JDK 1.3 (for now). Necessary / Important ===================== + Undo (with keybinding) + Word wrap + File based token lists + File-based settings (colors, keybindings, etc.) + Dialog for settings + Push/Pop bookmark + Block indentation of selected text with [TAB] key + Code quality - Apply naming conventions (e.g. .eolMarkers -> .showEOLMarkers) - Verify visibility of class members (e.g. internal methods should not be public) - Self-/Stresstest routines Nice-To-Have ============ + Code completion + Parameter info + More tokenmarkers + Format-only edit mode - insert/delete whitespace (spaces, tabs, carriage returns, etc.) - delete/edit/insert comments + Advanced bookmarking + Mouse-wheel support This e-mail and any attachment is for authorised use by the intended recipient(s) only. Hi, what do think about a format-only edit mode. This would be useful for reformatting or cleaning up code without risking any damage to the text itself. The format mode should be type specific as comment markers are specific and Phython programs, for instance, use indentation as block markers. In format mode, you could only: - insert/delete whitespace (spaces, tabs, carriage returns, etc.). This would exclude changing whitespace in string literals. And some types = may not allow carriage returns at arbitrary positions without a line = continuation character. You must also not remove a whitespace between two non-whitespace-characters. - delete/edit/insert comments. This would exclude commenting existing = code and also uncommenting if it results in non-comment text.=20 Any ideas/suggestions? Hi, Its good to see ongoing development with this package. I've used it before with excellent results. I'm now working on a project that requires server side scripting and based on my previous experience, I intend to use it in a simple IDE for writing/testing jython code. One capability that would be very useful, especially for new jython coders is a code completion feature. I'm not aware of any product that can do this for jython, and judging from various queries on mailing lists there is a need for jython oriented code completion. It would be really helpful if SpeedJava like features were available while editing the python code. The jython scripts have access to the underlying java libraries so the java completion should remain. (As you know, SpeedJava is a plugin for jEdit). regards James |
