A custom widget that can display formatted text is needed for the main history window. This way, user names could stick out, actions could be in italics, links could work/etc.
Somebody else is going to make the locally-run version of the chatterbox use Swing, which has controls that support HTML. However, this feature is not installed in most browsers, so putting it into the web-based applet would majorly restrict access to it. Unless I can find a control that allows formatted text, I'm going to keep the applet version using plain text.

The Swing version seems to be out for now, so I'm just skipping formatted text completely for now. A full-fledged noding environment should be based in Swing, though, since it is easier to do GUI (and formatted text) stuff in.
