From: db.mo To: jazzplusplus-devel Date: Sun, 9 Nov 2008 15:29:51 +0000 Subject: [jazzplusplus-devel] Jazz (svn 620) doing weird alsa things.. <<snip>> Mind you, this is a first attempt here with a hardsynth card so it's all 'new ground' as it were....I'll get the softsynth stuff in and running and do a check of what is known to be working, and then compare results. More later... Help system works fine, softsynth works fine. The emu10k1 works fine as well. I've deduce the error I was getting about device or resource busy, is related to the mpu-401 port driver. As it's not used here, I've just blacklisted that kernel module and the problem goes away. (seems like it hangs eternally looking for a connected device no answer) The sb!live sound great actually - no latency with this baby. Going to have a bit of a play..... That is to say, why don't we just install wx in the user's $HOME instead so that all 3 packages don't need root_priv at all? I'm only thinking of users who might not like having to work this out...(I think my mind mumbling 'consistent approach' or such and similar... <grin>)....I just linked tex2rtf into the wx289/bin path because I'm pathetically lazy. Then the --prefix option to configure would need to be /usr/local/wx289 and the user would need root access to install tex2rtf. You could copy the tex2rtf binary to /usr/local/wx289/bin or set your PATH appropriately to get around this. Pete |

Greets, Well, this is different behavior ... take this with a pinch of salt 'cos I haven't quite got everything the way it should be...ie; I haven't got a softsynth installed yet, I haven't loaded a soundfont into the emu10k1 yet....and nor have I checked this on the Deb box...even so, I wasn't quite expecting this... When first starting jazz, it asks for location of jazz.cfg as per normal. Then it popped a midi device requester for only the mpu-401 port on the emu10k1, satisfied that and it popped another requester window listing the 4 wavetable ports on the emu10k1. I will pick port 0 ..... Then it asks for the jazz.hhp file location...which really should be in ~/Jazz++/TestInstall/share/Jazz++ but is in fact located in /Jazz++/TestInstall/bin/HelpFiles....a small thing to fix one day. Then I quit jazz, restarted it...this time the midi device requestor pops up again with -all- the emu10k1 output ports listed, pick port 0, but then complains ' subscribe: Device or resource busy' (even though it definitely isn't, checked with aconnect)...jazz starts but no note events get loaded into trackwin... Discovered if I delete ~/.Jazz and try again, this device or resource busy message is not longer evident...strange... Mind you, this is a first attempt here with a hardsynth card so it's all 'new ground' as it were....I'll get the softsynth stuff in and running and do a check of what is known to be working, and then compare results. More later... Regards, Donald B _________________________________________________________________ It's simple! Yes, but if they already have other PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH lines in the file, this technique can get a little confusing for users. I like just listing the lines. That way they can use an editor or append the lines using echo like you suggest. Pete |

That too way too long, but everything is built. I changed the way I build wxWidgets so that it generates shared object versions of the libraries. I went to update the Jazz++ web site with the instructions and I couldn't access it. SourceForge changed the way the web content is accessed. I figured this out, but haven't modified the web page yet. Since I'm using shared wxWidgets libraries, I had to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH instead of LIBRARY_PATH on my Mandiva machine account. I changed the definition of the environment variable, but left the export line for the environment variable using LIBRARY_PATH instead of LD_LIBRARY_PATH. After I built tex2rtf, it complained about using an incompatible wxWidgets library due to the mistake. It took me a long time to figure out what was wrong. Anyway, Jazz++ built on Linux localhost 2.6.22.19-desktop-2mdv #1 SMP Mon May 5 20:55:05 EDT 2008 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2800+ GNU/Linux but I haven't tried to run it yet. Same for Mandriva and Fedora. If you use the bash shell, I believe you can set some of this using ulimit in your .bash_profile. <bash man page> ulimit [-SHacdefilmnpqrstuvx [limit]] Provides control over the resources available to the shell and to processes started by it, on systems that allow such control. The -H and -S options specify that the hard or soft limit is set for the given resource. A hard limit cannot be increased once it is set; a soft limit may be increased up to the value of the hard limit. If neither -H nor -S is specified, both the soft and hard limits are set. The value of limit can be a number in the unit specified for the resource or one of the special values hard, soft, or unlimited, which stand for the current hard limit, the current soft limit, and no limit, respectively. If limit is omitted, the current value of the soft limit of the resource is printed, unless the -H option is given. When more than one resource is specified, the limit name and unit are printed before the value. Other options are interpreted as fol- lows: -a All current limits are reported -c The maximum size of core files created -d The maximum size of a process’s data segment -e The maximum scheduling priority ("nice") -f The maximum size of files written by the shell and its children -i The maximum number of pending signals -l The maximum size that may be locked into memory -m The maximum resident set size (has no effect on Linux) -n The maximum number of open file descriptors (most systems do not allow this value to be set) -p The pipe size in 512-byte blocks (this may not be set) -q The maximum number of bytes in POSIX message queues -r The maximum real-time scheduling priority -s The maximum stack size -t The maximum amount of cpu time in seconds -u The maximum number of processes available to a single user -v The maximum amount of virtual memory available to the shell -x The maximum number of file locks If limit is given, it is the new value of the specified resource (the -a option is display only). If no option is given, then -f is assumed. Values are in 1024-byte increments, except for -t, which is in seconds, -p, which is in units of 512-byte blocks, and -n and -u, which are unscaled values. The return status is 0 unless an invalid option or argument is supplied, or an error occurs while setting a new limit. </bash man page> I have developed on systems that limit the core dump size. This prevented me from debugging a core dump. i added the following lime to my .bash_profile to get a core dump... #========================================= # Allow core dump files of unlimited size. #========================================= ulimit -S -c unlimited > /dev/null 2>&1 HTH, Pete |

I found my emu10k1 card and freed a slot for it, but I've not as yet had a tinker with it (obvious reasons ;)....but over this weekend I should get around to that. Just a question for both Pete & yourself (seeing as you're both on fedora)....could you look at your /etc/security/limits.conf file and let me know if it contains any entries for your user account?..(and what they read if existent) I've discovered there's a way to tune user & user run task priorities from this location, and am interested with what fedora policy here is -- on a Deb install there are no user entries. I just downloaded mandriva-linux-one-2009-GNOME-int-cdrom-i586.iso, and I think I loaded a machine with 2008.* to work with you a while ago. Let me see if the machine still works and the HD is still around ;)... It has 2008.0 loaded. I'm getting the updates for it as I write this. I'll try to update and rebuild the WX_2_8_BRANCH of wxWidgets, then tex2rtf, then Jazz++ on the machine. Pete |

It's good to hear from Don too. I just committed a change to the configure code that forces the use of wxWidgets 2.8.9 or higher. I just successfully built the current trunk of tex2rtf and Jazz++ on my Fedora 9 box... $ g++ --version g++ (GCC) 4.3.0 20080428 (Red Hat 4.3.0-8) Copyright (C) 2008 Free Software Foundation, Inc. Yeehaw! Somebody's back on the list. I might like to try building the most modern version again. It built a month or so into the last flurry of activity. Several weeks later I couldn't get it to build again. I'm suspicious that it might have involved my setting compiler related environment variables in the first instance, but not the 2nd. Anyway, are you guys going to be around here for a while now? Cheers.... -- Kevin |

From you build log, it looks like you are building the version of tex2rtf from the wx distribution. Is that true? Remember we have a Julian Smart sanctioned for of tex2rtf under the Jazz++ source. Are you you trying to build that version? Pete |

Greetings, I'm back from a very impromptu visit to the far western reaches of central Queensland -- I had the opportunity to meet with some Aboriginal elders regarding stories of 'The Dreaming' (sometimes erroneously referred to as the 'Dreamtime') and I couldn't pass it up ; it was most interesting.....[and totally off topic ;-] I've only been back a few days, but it doesn't look like I've missed much -- my TFT screen died about an hour after turning it back on, so I had to get another ; now I can see and get back into this lot here......anyhow..... FreeBSD 7.0 -- first off the rank, was to get the 'spare' system here up and running ; for the record the rig is an Albatron K8NF4 - AM2 mainboard, 1gb ddr2, AMD 'LE 1600' CPU.....so I thought I'd do the (free)BSD thing first. (hint: avoid installing BSD from disc, the disc swapping will drive you mad..) In the FreeBSD case, wxwidgets compiles OK....however....Jazz++ won't build yet -- configure: error: unknown system type x86_64-unknown-freebsd7.0 -- no big rush of course, but that is the current state of play. It seems like it should work, however the *BSD snd drivers all hook to the old OSS API, and so one would need use the compat-linux kernel module + the lib-alsa port to get it running....(I think)... 1. Looks like I boofled the images I uploaded a little (background layer) -- Pete, expect an email sometime soon with corrected imagery... 2. I notice wxWidgets 2.8.8 is out -- does this alter the progression of things any?? 3. Of course, documentation still needs work, but time away will help this process (gives one a new outlook on things ;) ... expect some more patches for this soon...
