There is a new mailing list for SVN commit messages. You can subscribe by visiting https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/jazzplusplus-updates Patrick, if you are listening, I figured out how to modify the other lists, but I had to change the mailing list pass word to do it. Contact me off list if you ever need it. Pete |

Patrick, Are you out there? From the mailman interface for the Jazz++ mailing lists, it looks like you are the mail list maintainer. Is there any chance of creating a new mailing list for SVN commit message? If you can, replies to the SVN commit message list should be automatically reply to this list. I can setup SVN to send commit messages to the new list. Also, could the default reply for the Jazz++ user's list be changed to the list instead of the original poster? If you are too busy, I would be willing to do these administrative tasks, but I think you are the only one who can at this point. Let me know if I'm missing something. Pete |

Today I'm working on preventing flicker in the track window when updating. I'm going to start a separate thread to see if I can get the projects mailing list maintainer to create another list for SVN commit messages. If that actually happens, you can subscribe to the new list to track my progress. I have extensive experience developing in Linux and Windows, but none on the Mac. What would you recommend for a Mac development system? Thanks again for trying the described wxWidgets build. Pete |

After looking at all of the errors and warnings you posted, I believe I know what is causing the problem. I'm guessing I built wxWidgets with different options than you. I change some settings in setup.h before running nmake with the Microsoft tools. Here's how I build wxWidgets... 1. Download wxMSW-2.8.7.zip from the wxWidgets web site. 2. Extract the zip file to C:\ExternalPackages. Extracting creates a wxMSW-2.8.7 directory directly under C:\ExternalPackages. 3. Change the name of the top-level wxWidgets directory to wxMSW-2.8.7-VC8 so I can have other versions of wxWidgets built with other compilers in parallel with this directory. 4. Download wxWidgets-2.8.7-CHM.zip from the wxWidgets web site. 5. Extract the zip file to C:\ExternalPackages\wxMSW-2.8.7-VC8. This installs the compiled HTML help files for wxWidgets and tex2rtf. 6. Download wxWidgets-2.8.7-HTML.zip from the wxWidgets web site. 7. Extract the zip file to C:\ExternalPackages\wxMSW-2.8.7-VC8. This installs the HTML help files for wxWidgets and tex2rtf. 8. Make the following changes to C:\ExternalPackages\wxMSW-2.8.7-VC8\include\wx\msw\setup.h: Macro From To WXWIN_COMPATIBILITY_2_6 1 0 wxUSE_STD_IOSTREAM 0 1 wxUSE_IOSTREAMH 1 0 wxUSE_GLCANVAS 0 1 We don't really need the OpnGL code for this project, but I use it on other projects. I want to eventually change wxUSE_STL from 0 to 1, but a while ago there was a bug reported in this implementation on the wxWidgets developers list. 9. Edit C:\ExternalPackages\wxMSW-2.8.7-VC8\include\wx\msw\wx.rc and comment out the following line. #include "wx/msw/wince/wince.rc" 10. Use Start | All Programs | Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2005 | Visual Studio .NET Tools | Visual Studio .NET 2005 Command Prompt to start a console session. 11. Ensure that the command-line compiler and tools (including nmake) are installed and ready to run. 12. Change directory to C:\ExternalPackages\wxMSW-2.8.7-VC8\build\msw. 13. Build the debug static version of the wxWidgets libraries by typing: nmake BUILD=debug SHARED=0 USE_OPENGL=1 -f makefile.vc 14. Build the release static version of the wxWidgets libraries by typing: nmake BUILD=release SHARED=0 USE_OPENGL=1 -f makefile.vc 15. Remove the build directories (vc_msw and vc_mswd) under c:\ExternalPackages\wxMSW-2.8.7-VC8\build\msw. 16. Change directory to C:\ExternalPackages\wxMSW-2.8.7-VC8\utils\tex2rtf\src. 17. Build the release static version of tex2rtf by typing: nmake BUILD=release SHARED=0 -f makefile.vc 18. Create a directory for the tex2rtf binaries under the wxWidgets distribution (c:\ExternalPackages\wxMSW-2.8.7-VC8\bin). 19. Move the tex2rtf binaries from c:\ExternalPackages\wxMSW-2.8.7-VC8\utils\tex2rtf\src \vc_msw. to c:\ExternalPackages\wxMSW-2.8.7-VC8\bin. 20. Remove the build directory (vc_msw) under c:\ExternalPackages\wxMSW-2.8.7-VC8\utils\tex2rtf\src. Leland, I hope you had the patience to follow all of that ;-) I really appreciate your attempt to build the code and report the problems you had. This is exactly what I'm looking for in terms of build feedback. I need to post the instructions listed above on the Jazz++ web site so others understand what I'm up to. I know this is asking a lot, but if you could build version 2.8.7 of wxWidgets described above and try it with the code in SVN I would really appreciate it. Thanks again for the very useful feedback, Pete |

I'd be interested in a Jazz revival too. I have the CVS code from about about September '07 running on wxWidgets 2.6/2.8 on the Mac. It even plays via the latest portmidi. I've gotten a lot of the incomplete dialogs "working" but not necessarily correctly...I just wanted to get them to compile and accept input. While I develop on the Mac, my intentions of getting Jazz++ working was actually targeting Windows with the main goal of making it accessible to visually impaired users. I haven't gotten to the point of integrating accessibility yet though and thought contributing to the revival might be more productive to begin with. For background, I currently participate in Audacity development and was responsible for making it more accessible to VI users. Holler, if y'all need some help. I will be finishing another project on March 31st and I'll be starting back up on my Jazz work as I hope to have something at least partially usable by June for my wife's birthday. Leland |

I was wondering if I could be given commit privileges for the Jazz++ CVS repository. I don't think I'm telling the folks who started this version of the project anything they don't already know, but I'm not sure a Jazz++ installation is even possible on a modern Linux system. I have a Fedora Core 7 system and I tried to build and install the current CVS version with a modern version of wxWidgets (the latest stable version is 2.8.7 but the latest version packaged for Fedora 7 is 2.8.4) installed. I had to fix a couple of minor issues with the configure.in file provided with the Jazz++ distribution. I added parentheses around the AC_MSG_RESULT arguments and I would like to commit this. I made it past the ./bootstrap step without any errors or warnings. Next I ran the following line from ./rebuild. $ ./configure --enable-alsa=yes --enable-sequencer2=yes This worked too. Next I tried to build the code using the next line from rebuild. $ make This command started compiling code in the xrc directory under the Jazz++ distribution. Unfortunately there were errors during this step. I started fixing them, but noticed that the xrc code was taken from the wxWidgets distribution. The xrc code is provided with the wxWidgets code, so I removed this directory from the top-level Makefile.am file and started the whole process over. This time, when I reached the make step, the code in jazz/src was being compiled. The code is using wxWidgets constructs that have long since been removed. The code is suffering from severe "bit rot" and needs to be reworked. I'm wondering if it is even possible to build the CVS code on any recent Linux distribution. I'm trying to update the code, but there is a lot of coding work to do. I started by generating a new Visual Studio .NET 2005 Jazz++ solution and project file and started porting the code using wxWidgets 2.8.7. So far I only have the guitar window working. Also the top-level directory README file that contains... see doc Unfortunately there is no doc directory currently in the CVS repository. After some googling, I found an old Jazz++ distribution (jazz-src-4.1.3.tar.gz) that contained the missing doc directory. This version contained an old Visual Studio 5 project file. I dredged up the old wxWindows version (1.68E) that it was compiled with and converted the tar ball provided Jazz++ project to Visual Studio 6 (I still have that old compiler loaded) and built the old wxWindows distribution using VC6. It took a while because I had to fix some wx code and get compiler setting to match between the projects, but I'm happy to say I have version 4.1.3 built using VC6. I think it might be a good idea to create a branch and commit the old code. It allows me to create a binary that I can use to see what the new code should be doing and others may wish to do the same. Let me know, Pete |

To be honest, we've done nothing in several years, may as well just hand him the keys. :) If a working version of Jazz++ appeared, I'd almost definitely use it. RoseGarden is fun, but last I used it it was still wildly unstable. If you guys were interested in starting from scratch with PyQt4, I might be able to find some time to help, but don't make that decision expecting my help. I have toyed with the idea of building a midi sequencer with python off and on, and can say that the libraries are definitely out there to do it. Mostly what I want is a drum machine that works more organically, but honestly I've picked up my bass twice in the last 6 months, and haven't picked up my guitar at all. I wonder sometimes if I even have time to think anymore. ;) These days I'm in school full-time, working part time, my wife's working full-time (luckily all of my kids are in school, so we can find time for all this busy-ness). I just put together a team to compete for the Google Lunar XPrize, and right this minute my two highest priorities are installing a dishwasher my wife's supposed to bring home any minute, and to finish my PyQt4-based accounting program so I can focus on the GLXP project some before school starts again. I work at the school, so I've been spending the break working on this accounting program. On the flip side, if you guys are interested in competing for the Google Lunar XPrize, I can definitely use some help in the programming end. We can use all sorts of help (most of the programmers I initially recruited haven't done much), but for anything besides programming, there are logistic issues, particularly if you build parts that have to be shipped here to Austin. You guys would pick. :) I have a preference for flyspray because it's small and light on server resources, and easy to install, but like i said, I've got too much on my plate right now to take on another project, so since you guys would have to deal with it, you guys get to pick. :) Sourceforge's trackers work, however, but they suck worse than a brand new hoover. Factoring the code that way seems like a good idea for many reasons, including being able to adapt to newer versions of the same GUI tool kit, whatever kit that may be. > Maybe you guys are indirectly suggesting that I fork Jazz++ if I want to > continue with wxWidgets development? The Linux ALSA drivers for the Delta 1010 are fantastic. Those in combination with the applications (e.g. Ardour) and the envy24control "mixer" for it allow full utilization. I have a 2nd 1010 that I'm planning to slave to my first. Cheers.... -- Kevin |
